Need help carrying out your New Year's resolution??There's a map for that: Google has created an interactive geographic resolution tracker, to remind you that you are not struggling?alone.

When the clock struck?midnight and 2013 was born, many of us quietly resolved to change something. This will be the year we will lose those extra 10 pounds, be kinder to our friends, learn a new language, change career paths, fall in love, and so on. A combination of Google's celebrated?mapping and translation technologies, wrapped in a charming design, the?new tool encourages users to write down those goals and show the world what improvements 2013 may bring.

To participate, head to Google's Zeitgeist page. Watch the resolutions pop up all over the map then, if you're feeling inspired,?click the button to add your own resolutions. Once you enter the resolution (along with your postal codes and country name), you select a category such as love, health or career.?

One of the neat things about Google's brainchild is that it allows users to enter resolutions in their native languages and then automatically?translates them for others around the world.

Thanks to this setup, a person who only speaks English can still watch in realtime as someone in Germany declares their intention to meet some pretty girls this year, someone living along the Adriatic Sea pledges to take life easier, and?a Russian resident swears this is the year he'll get in shape.

Dems want House vote on Senate-passed 'cliff' deal

WASHINGTON (AP) ? House Democratic leaders are pressing Speaker John Boehner to let the House vote on the Senate-approved bipartisan compromise that would avert much of the impact of the so-called fiscal cliff.

Following a nearly three-hour private meeting Tuesday between Vice President Joe Biden and House Democratic lawmakers, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Democrats expected Boehner to allow the House to vote on the accord.

Boehner has said the House will vote on the Senate measure or vote to amend it. He and House GOP lawmakers were also meeting Tuesday, and some Republicans expressed concerns that the measure needed more spending cuts.

The Senate passed the measure early Tuesday on an 89-8 vote.

The compromise would allow tax increases on the nation's highest earners but prevent tax boosts from everyone else.

The Associated Press now unveils its postseason awards the night before the Super Bowl, weeks after most people have stopped caring about the winner.

So we announce ours immediately after the regular season ends.

At a time when you still actually are interested in these matters and not, you know, you?ll win the Super Bowl, here are the men who, in our opinion, deserve special recognition for their accomplishments in the freshly-completed regular season.

Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Winner: Russell Wilson, Seahawks.

Runner-up: Robert Griffin, III, Redskins; Andrew Luck, Colts.

Honorable mention: Alfred Morris, Redskins; Doug Martin, Buccaneers.

The AP award likely will go to either of the top two picks in the draft, but it shouldn?t.? Wilson entered the league short on height and long on smarts and talent and determination.? Russell Wilson commanded the No. 1 spot on the depth chart in Seattle, beating out big-money free-agent Matt Flynn and incumbent starter Tarvaris Jackson, and Wilson then began to prove week-in and week-out that he is as good as his more famous counterparts who were selected much higher.

Despite the 11-5 record for the Colts, Luck had too many turnovers (contributing to a mediocre passer rating of 76.5), and Griffin missed a game and crunch time in another due to an inability to avoid contact.? While Luck broke Cam Newton?s rookie passing yardage record, Wilson tied Peyton Manning?s record for touchdown passes by a rookie ? and Wilson showed that he could run the ball effectively (489 yards, four touchdowns) without getting hit or, in turn, hurt.

The best news is that the three rookie quarterbacks all made it to the playoffs, and they?ll all make their postseason debuts on the same day.

Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Winner:? Luke Kuechly, Panthers.

Runner-up:? Janoris Jenkins, Rams.

Honorable mention:? Bobby Wagner, Seahawks; Lavonte David, Buccaneers; Casey Heyward, Packers; Harrison Smith, Vikings.

The ninth overall pick in the draft, Kuechly led the NFL with 164 tackles, finishing 10 short of the rookie record set in 2007 by Patrick Willis.? Kuechly also had 10 games with 10 or more tackles.? In Week Five, he slid from outside linebacker to the middle, where he participated in every snap on defense for the rest of the season.

Jenkins, a second-round steal, instantly became a dangerous cover man and return specialist.? He could soon be one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.? Some may say he already is.

Coach of the Year.

Winner:? Bruce Arians/Chuck Pagano, Colts.

Runner-up:? Leslie Frazier, Vikings.

Honorable mention:? Mike Shanahan, Redskins; Pete Carroll, Seahawks; John Fox, Broncos; Mike Smith, Falcons.

The best coach routinely is determined based on a team?s actual performance relative to its expected performance.? This year, no team exceeded expectations more than the Colts, who won 11 games a season after winning only two.? Pagano and Arians combined to generate a wild-card berth despite Pagano?s three-month absence due to leukemia treatments, as part of a run that included seven come-from-behind wins.

Frazier and the Vikings improved their win total by seven, going from 3-13 to 10-6 and a playoff berth secured on the last day of the season against the Packers.? Shanahan and the Redskins reeled off seven straight to secure the NFC East after Shanahan seemingly threw in the towel on the 2012 season.? (And all future coaches whose teams are 3-6 after nine games will do the same.)

In all, three of the six worst teams from 2011 have vaulted to the playoffs only one year later, providing real hope to every other non-playoff team, in 2013 and beyond.

Comeback Player of the Year.

Winner:? Peyton Manning, Broncos; Adrian Peterson, Vikings.

The two greatest comebacks in NFL history came in the same year.? For Manning, the return from multiple neck surgeries was unprecedented.? For Peterson, his performance following a Christmas Eve 2011 ACL tear was equally stunning and unlikely.? Both deserve the recognition, and it?s only fair for them to share it.

It?s also only fair that there be no one else mentioned as the runner-up or otherwise.? Manning and Peterson are in their own class on this one, and no one else comes close.

Executive of the Year.

Winner: John Elway, Broncos.

Runner-up: John Schneider, Seahawks.

Honorable mention: Ryan Grigson, Colts; Rick Spielman, Vikings; Les Snead, Rams.

Elway wanted Peyton Manning in large part because it gave Elway cover to dump Tim Tebow.? The gamble (in light of Manning?s recent medical history) paid off in a major way, making other teams (like perhaps the Texans) wish they?d done more to land one of the greatest players in NFL history.? Though making the move for Manning is enough on its own, hiring coach John Fox in 2011 after a two-win season in Carolina, picking linebacker Von Miller in last year?s draft, and not giving up on Knowshon Moreno are icing on a cake that Elway has been masterfully baking for the past two season ? even though Elway entered the job with fry-cook credentials.

Schneider found a quarterback who could become one of the best current signal-callers in the league in round three of the draft, five spots after the Jaguars picked a punter.? Schneider likewise rolled the dice in round one on Bruce Irvin, a controversial pick who panned out as a rookie.? Throw in linebacker Bobby Wagner in round two and the prudent decision to re-sign Marshawn Lynch, and Schneider had a lot to do with the team?s unexpected success in 2012.

Grigson quickly turned around a talent-challenged roster with a strong draft and the ability to make good decisions about who should stay and who should go, bringing back Reggie Wayne and keeping Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.? His success will make more owners opt for young, grinding scouts.

Offensive player of the year.

Winner:? Adrian Peterson, Vikings.

Runner-up:? Calvin Johnson, Lions.

Honorable mention:? Drew Brees, Saints; Marshawn Lynch, Seahawks.

Peterson is the easy and obvious choice, given that he rushed for 2,097 yards, the second most in NFL history.

Johnson set the single-season record for receiving yardage with 1,964, and Brees threw for more than 5,000 yards for the third time in his career.? Lynch?s performance gets lost in Peterson, but the guy the Bills gave away has become one of the best running backs in the league.

Defensive Player of the Year.

Winner:? J.J. Watt, Texans.

Runner-up:? Von Miller, Broncos.

Honorable mention: Aldon Smith, 49ers; Charles Tillman, Bears.

Watt was a wire-to-wire disruptive force for the Texans.? Beyond his league-leading sack total (20.5), Watt has shattered the mold for 3-4 defensive ends.? Miller is becoming one of the best 4-3 outside linebackers in the NFL, and Smith has emerged as the top 3-4 pass-rushing outside linebacker.

Amazingly, all three players are in only their second seasons in the NFL.

MVP.

Winner:? Adrian Peterson, Vikings.

Runner-up: Peyton Manning, Broncos.

Honorable mention: J.J. Watt, Texans; Aaron Rodgers, Packers; Tom Brady, Patriots; Matt Ryan, Falcons.

Many have wrestled with this one for weeks, determined to give it to Manning but keeping an open mind for Peterson.? It would have been easy to say Peterson gets it only if he sets the single-season rushing record.? It?s harder to accept that he missed it (by 27 feet) but still deserves it.

In the end, Peterson?s value to his team simply outweighs Manning?s ? even though Peyton once again has had a season to remember, shrewdly picking a talented team with an easy schedule and pushing the franchise to the top seed in the AFC.? Last year, however, the Broncos made it to the final eight without Manning.? This year, the Vikings would have been nothing without Peterson, a man who overcame a serious knee injury to become better than he ever was.

Moreover, at a time when we are more sensitive than ever before to the damage inflicted on the bodies of NFL players, Peterson earned every yard, foot, and inch that he gained.? Even the long runs came after he ran through a potential tackler.? Or two.? Or five.

Australia, Asian nations ringing in 2013 with fireworks

LONDON (AP) ? Sydney's skyline erupted in fireworks as Australia ushered in 2013 on Tuesday, while extravagant displays soon followed in Hong Kong and Beijing, and even the once-isolated country of Myanmar joined the party for the first time in decades.

Asia greeted the new year with an atmosphere of renewed optimism despite the "fiscal cliff" impasse of spending cuts and tax increases threatening to reverberate globally from the United States and the tattered economies of Europe, where the party was expected to be more subdued.

Celebrations were planned around the world, culminating with the traditional crystal ball drop in New York City's Times Square, where 1 million people were expected to cram into the surrounding streets.

The balmy summer night in Sydney was split by 7 tons of fireworks fired from rooftops and barges, many cascading from the city's Harbor Bridge, in a $6.9 million pyrotechnic extravaganza billed by organizers as the world's largest.

In Myanmar, after nearly five decades under military regimes that discouraged or banned big public gatherings, about 90,000 people experienced the country's first New Year's Eve countdown in a field in the largest city of Yangon.

"We feel like we are in a different world," said Yu Thawda, a university student who came with three of her friends.

Tens of thousands of people lined Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor to view a $1.6 million fireworks display, said to be the biggest ever in the southern Chinese city.

In North Korea, cannons boomed at midnight in Pyongyang as people crowded the streets of the capital to watch a fireworks show over the Taedong River. After being in mourning a year ago regarding leader Kim Jong Il's death, North Koreans celebrated the end of a big year that included the rise of new leader Kim Jong Un and the recent launch of a satellite into space.

Hotels, clubs and other sites in New Delhi, the Indian capital, canceled festivities after the death Saturday of a young rape victim touched off days of mourning and reflection about women's safety. People were asked to light candles to express their solidarity with the victim.

In Indonesia, Jakarta's street party centered on a 7-kilometer (4-mile) thoroughfare closed to traffic from nightfall until after midnight. Workers erected 16 large stages along the normally clogged, eight-lane highway through the heart of the city. Indonesia's booming economy is a rare bright spot amid global gloom and is bringing prosperity ? or the hope of it ? to its people.

In the Philippines, where many are recovering from devastation from a recent typhoon, health officials have hit upon a successful way to stop revelers from setting off huge illegal firecrackers that maim and injure hundreds of Filipinos each year.

A health official, Eric Tayag, donned the splashy outfit of South Korean star PSY and danced to his YouTube hit "Gangnam Style" video while preaching against the use of illegal firecrackers on TV, in schools and in public arenas.

"The campaign has become viral," Tayag said.

In austerity-hit Europe, the mood was more restrained ? if hopeful. The year 2013 is projected to be a sixth straight one of recession amid Greece's worst economic crisis since World War II.

Still, in his televised New Year's Eve message, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras promised Greeks that the worst of the crisis is past, and declared 2013 a "year of hope" that will see the beginning of the country's rebirth.

Celebrating New Year's Eve with a vespers service in St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Benedict XVI said that despite all the injustice in the world, goodness prevails. In his homily, Benedict said taking time to meditate in prolonged reflection and prayer can help "find healing from the inevitable wounds of daily life."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's New Year's message warned her country to prepare for difficult economic times ahead. Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, decided to cancel celebrations in light of the economic crisis. Nicosia said 16,000 euros ($21,000) saved from the canceled event will be given to some 320 needy schoolchildren.

In Spain, where a recession has left unemployment at a staggering 25 percent, people are hoping for a better new year.

"It's been tough, but some celebrations are too deeply-ingrained to let go," said Olga Camino, 25, who said she would be celebrating in the streets of Madrid in fancy dress with a large group of friends. She said they would all eat 12 grapes as the clock in Madrid's central Puerta del Sol struck midnight, a tradition observed throughout Spain.

Scotland's Edinburgh, which traditionally hosts one of the biggest New Year's Eve parties in Europe, also planned good cheer. Organizers said about 75,000 people are expected for the Scottish capital's Hogmanay ? or year-end ? celebrations.

Hong Kong feng shui master Raymond Lo predicted 2013 would be less turbulent than 2012 because the Chinese New Year in February will usher in the year of the snake, bringing an end to the year of the dragon, which was associated with water. Water is one of the five elements in feng shui theory, the Chinese practice of arranging objects and choosing dates to improve luck.

"Water is fear. So that's why we have had so much turbulence especially in the winter months," such as doomsday prophecies, school shootings and concerns about the fiscal cliff, said Lo.

"But the good news is that the coming year of the snake is the first time that fire has come back since 2007. Fire actually is the opposite to water, fire is happiness. So therefore the year of the snake is a much more optimistic year. So you can see signs of economic recovery now," he added.

Teresa Rodriguez Williamson: Les Mis?rables Through the Eyes of a Mommy

Eighteen months ago I did not hold the title "mommy," but on this day I do. And, it was with this fairly new lens that I watched the movie Les Mis?rables. I was invited to a private screening with my girlfriend who is a makeup artist to celebrities. It was a treat to be a "plus one" for the night and I was looking forward to getting lost in the film and not my baby's teething dramas.

But my protective motherhood gene reared its ugly head when Fantine, compellingly played by Anne Hathaway, hit the screen with all the pain and desperation only a mother could feel. With a heavy heart and hopeless, Fantine tries to figure out how to make money to care for her daughter. As a mother, I often wonder, "What I would do for my baby?" And the answer is, "I would do anything."

Which is exactly what Fantine does with heart wrenching consequences. When Anne Hathaway sang "I Dreamed a Dream" as a mother completely desperate, ashamed, and broken, all I could do was hold my breath and silently weep. Because the truth is, if I was an unemployed, single parent who lived France in 1815, I, too, would sell my hair and all my other body parts to save my daughter.

Throughout the epic tale, different characters reveal other aspects of motherhood with incredible clarity and honesty. In an early scene, Valjean, played by the talented Hugh Jackman, makes a commitment to Fantine regarding her daughter Cosette. His determination to protect this young girl is one of might and conviction. As I watched, I was reminded of my role as a mother and protector, a role that needs to be proactive.

While other characters set the screen on fire with their heart-filled resolve, ?ponine, who is played by Samantha Barks, subtly illustrates how her simple acts of kindness, protection, and care can be so easily ignored by the ones she loves. It is a beautiful, yet tragic reminder of how we can sometimes overlook the little things that others do for us. While watching her final scene, all I wanted to do was thank my mom for all the sacrifices she has made for me.

One of the most delightful characters is Gavroche, a young boy who lives on the streets of Paris and steels more than just smiles. The boy, played by Daniel Huttlestone, reminded me of the optimism and spunk children have, but as with youth -- it's gone too soon. Throughout the movie I just wanted to reach out and hug him, protect him, and take him home (and give him a bath).

As the music moves from powerful crescendos to dark valleys, each character took me through a labyrinth of emotions with such vengeance that it was hard to believe that Les Mis?rables is just a movie. I am not a film critic -- heck, this was the first movie I've seen in months. But there was something so raw and truthful about this film that forced me to examine my role as a mother.

I was reminded that right now my daughter is young and unafraid, and her dreams are filled with hope and wonder. And that her world is a song, and the song is exciting -- even if it's "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" played 67 times in a row. So, as her mommy, I will do my best to keep her dreams alive.
