Fair Em at the Union Theatre, SE1

There are balladeers; there are hey nonny nonnies; there are men in tights. What there isn?t in Phil Willmott?s production of this limp comedy, despite its billing as a disputed Shakespearean text, is any serious suggestion that the text is the work of the Bard. Part of a volume erroneously attributed to Shakespeare by Charles II?s librarian, Fair Em is a romp of bed-swapping, tomfoolery and romantic misadventure.

At its most persuasive, Willmott?s version has something of the earnest silliness of Monty Python; but even then, it struggles to make much of a piece so profoundly lacking in depth or
