ADAO Fact #5: The World Health Organization estimates that ...

Friday, April 5th, 2013.

The ADAO?s "7 Facts for 7 Days" campaign today shares: "The World Health Organization estimates that 107,000 workers die annually from exposure to asbestos."

Thie fact is made all the more stark when you note that the WHO is only taking into account asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis in these estimates. From the "Asbestos: elimination of asbestos-related diseases" fact sheet:

All forms of asbestos are carcinogenic to humans, and may cause mesothelioma and cancer of the lung, larynx and ovary. Asbestos exposure is also responsible for other diseases, such as asbestosis (fibrosis of the lungs), pleural plaques, thickening and effusions.

Currently, about 125 million people in the world are exposed to asbestos at the workplace. According to the most recent WHO estimates, more than 107,000 people die each year from asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis resulting from exposure at work. One in every three deaths from occupational cancer is estimated to be caused by asbestos.

Colon and other gastrointestinal cancers have also been connected to asbestos exposure. The National Cancer Institute estimates that more than 100,000 cases of colon cancer will be diagnosed in 2013 in the US. Another 40,000 will be diagnosed with rectal cancer. More than 220,000 American are estimated to receive a lung cancer diagnosis in 2013. How many of these people were exposed to asbestos? How many of these cases of cancer could have been prevented?

As recently as 2009, OSHA estimated that construction and general industry workers exposed to asbestos totaled 1.3 million. Without a ban, more asbestos will be brought into the US and these product will be risking the health and lives of workers for decades to come.
