Shoppers spent more on their eftpos and credit cards in core retail sectors last month, but a drop in spending on fuel and non-retail items dragged overall card spending down.
Total card spending slipped 0.2 per cent on February, according to seasonally adjusted Statistics New Zealand figures.
Core retail card spending lifted 0.5 per cent, thanks in part to a $12 million (2.1 per cent) boost in hospitality.
That lift was offset by falls in fuel spending, down 2.5 per cent or $16m, and non-retail (excluding services spending), down 1.8 per cent or $21m.
Spending across all retail industries, including fuel and vehicle-related sales, was up 0.3 per cent.
The increase in hospitality spending is a recovery from February, when it fell 2.5 per cent or $15m on January.?
Card spending slipped in February, suggesting a lingering Rugby World Cup hangover.
