Motorola to shut down its operations in India

?

Motorola is planning to shut down its operations in India and across Asia Pacific, according to a latest report from BGR India.

?It will shrink operations in Asia and India, and centre research and development in Chicago, Sunnyvale and Beijing,? Motorola?s new Chief Executive Dennis Woodside had stated in an interview recently. Woodside indicated that the company would exit unprofitable markets, and stop making low-end cellphones.

?From the way things look like, only those employees who are working on projects related to products in the US will retain their jobs. Motorola will continue to sell its products till stocks last and its service centers will continue to function. Independent real estate companies have confirmed that Motorola?s Hyderabad R&D facility property has been put up for sale. In the APAC region, the company will shut shop in all countries except Australia and Korea,? the BGR report adds.

Google acquired Motorola Mobility last year to bolster its capabilities in the mobile market. The downsizing is aimed at reinventing Motorola, and reviving its sagging fortunes. -Buzzom

A NEW STAGE

Mitt Romney's convention planners transformed part of the Forum overnight, getting ready for the big finale ? the presidential nominee's speech to the nation.

They extended the stage about 12 feet out into the crowd and surrounded the bottom of the steps with a see-through barrier. They're still drilling and working on it, and the podium is gone at the moment. A bunch of people are testing the stability of the new stage now. Currently, the center seats are gone, but there's still a space where they haven't put down new carpeting and it looks like the seats will go there.

Sony's VPLHW50ES projector revealed at IFA, brings home 4K and 3D in October

Look, we loved Sony's VPL-VW1000ES when it brought home 4K capability last year, but since we don't have the $20k+ laying around to spend on one, we're especially excited to hear about the just revealed VPL-HWH50ES. Slotting in above the VPL-HW30ES, it uses a version of the same technology seen in the VW1000ES to process images for 4K and of course supports 3D as well. We're all very familiar with the company's SXRD projectors by now but if you need more information the press release is after the break. While we know these are due to ship across Europe in both black and white by the end of October, what you won't find, at least so far, is a price tag. We'll keep our eyes peeled at CEDIA next week for more information.

Bernanke speech may offer clues to Fed's next step

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Few expect Chairman Ben Bernanke to signal at a Federal Reserve conference Friday in Jackson Hole, Wyo., that the Fed is about to take major new action to boost the economy.

No one is sure, though.

Three years after the end of the Great Recession, the U.S. economy is still struggling to break out of a slog that's kept unemployment at a painfully high 8.3 percent.

After its last policy meeting, the Fed repeated a pledge to try to boost growth if hiring remains weak. And minutes of that meeting showed that some Fed officials felt the economy would need more support "fairly soon "unless it improved significantly.

Still, many analysts think slightly brighter economic news since then has diminished the need for the Fed to act soon. Bernanke may want to review the U.S. jobs report for August, due on Sept. 7, and perhaps other forthcoming economic reports, before seeking any policy changes.

In the meantime, investors will still be primed for any hint in Bernanke's speech Friday that Fed action might be coming soon.

Among the possibilities:

? BOND BUYING

The most dramatic tool the Fed has left in its arsenal would be another round of bond buying, to try to lower long-term interest rates. This is known as quantitative easing, or QE. In two rounds of QE, the Fed has bought more than $2 trillion of Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities. Its second round of purchases ended in June 2011.

Those purchases were followed in September by a program called "Operation Twist." Under this program, the Fed has been selling short-term Treasurys and buying longer-term Treasurys. Like QE, Twist aims to encourage borrowing and spending by reducing long-term rates.

There's a difference, though: QE expands the Fed's investment portfolio ? a portfolio that stands at $2.9 trillion and will eventually have to be reduced significantly. Operation Twist does not expand the Fed's portfolio; it just reorders it.

Many analysts think a third round of bond purchases ? QEIII, in short hand ? would include both Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities.

Some Fed officials have also argued that if the Fed does launch a new bond buying program, it shouldn't set a target amount as in the past. Rather, it could keep a new program open-ended so it could continue to buy bonds until it saw significant economic improvement.

? INTEREST-RATE TIMETABLE

The Fed has kept its benchmark interest rate at a record low since December 2008. And for more than two years, it pledged to keep rates at exceptionally low levels for "an extended period." Then, a year ago, the Fed put a date on that plan: It said it expected to keep rates at record lows through at least mid-2013. In January, it pushed the target date to at least late 2014.

The Fed could try, by extending that timetable even beyond late 2014, to encourage investors to keep rates low. The minutes of the Fed's last policy meeting said many officials favored extending the date but chose to delay any change until at least the September meeting. By then, Fed officials will have been able to review their updated economic forecasts.

Many analysts think a timetable change is likely in September given the level of support for the move within the Fed.

? RESERVE INTEREST

The Fed has discussed the possibility of trimming the scant 0.25 percent interest it pays banks on their excess reserves. The idea would be that if banks earned less interest, or none, on this money, they'd be more inclined to step up lending and boost the economy.

But the minutes of the last meeting indicated that only "a couple" of Fed officials favored this move. Others expressed concern that trimming this small interest payment could disrupt the operation of money market funds.

? OTHER OPTIONS

One other possibility that appears under discussion would be linking the Fed's decisions on any rate increases not to a specific date but to the economy's health.

Charles Evans, head of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, has said the Fed should consider pledging to keep rates at record lows until the unemployment rate drops to 7 percent. And the minutes of the last meeting indicated that Fed officials are pondering whether to drop any timetable and instead link any rate change to the economy's performance.

Other Fed officials oppose this idea. They say it could raise the likelihood of higher inflation later.

? NO HINTS

Many analysts say that on Friday, Bernanke may merely review the economy's performance to date and repeat his pledge that the Fed is ready to act if growth doesn't improve. He might repeat the options available, without any hints of what the Fed might do in September.

Those who think Bernanke will take such an approach argue that the Fed remains divided and that Bernanke doesn't want to be seen as dictating a choice before the policy committee meets in September.

Analysts differ on whether the Fed will act before the November election, given its long-held preference for keeping a low profile close to presidential elections.

"The Fed doesn't like to move right before an election because they get accused of being partisan and favoring one candidate over the other," said David Wyss, a former Fed economist and now a professor at Brown University.

But David Jones, who has written four books on the Fed, said he expects some form of Fed action in September.

"Bernanke has already given us his criteria," Jones said. "''If economic growth remains so slow that he can't count on an improvement in labor market conditions in a sustainable way, then he will push for more Fed support."

===============================================================================

Rationale

The rating on PT Gajah Tunggal Tbk. reflects the company's aggressive capital structure,

exposure to the cyclical and competitive tire manufacturing industry, and limited financial

flexibility. Gajah Tunggal's competitive cost position and leading share in the Indonesian tire

market temper these weaknesses. We assess the company's business risk profile to be "weak" and

its financial risk profile to be "highly leveraged," as our criteria define these terms.

We expect Gajah Tunggal's financial risk profile to strengthen to "aggressive" over the next

12-18 months. We forecast that the company's debt-to-EBITDA ratio will decline to less than 3x

in 2012, and to below 2.5x in 2013, under our base-case scenario. Gajah Tunggal's debt-to-EBITDA

ratio, at about 2.6x for the 12 months ended June 30, 2012, was better than we had expected due

to a better-than-anticipated improvement in EBITDA margin and higher revenue growth. EBITDA for

the first half of 2012 was about 60% of our full-year projection of Indonesian rupiah (IDR) 1.65

trillion.

We expect Gajah Tunggal's revenue growth to moderate somewhat in the second half of 2012.

The full effect of Indonesia's new regulation on down payments on cars and motorcycles purchased

on credit will kick in from the third quarter. This could moderately weaken the volume of

non-replacement tires for the original equipment manufacturers market. Nevertheless, we believe

the company's margin will remain generally favorable given lower natural rubber prices. Recent

reports suggest that large Southeast Asian rubber producers could curb supply. This may push up

prices temporarily, but the generally weak global macroeconomic outlook will likely deter

permanent and substantial increases in rubber prices over the next six to12 months, in our view.

Still, the sector's improved profitability could trigger a more intense price competition to

garner market share given domestic tire manufacturers' improved margins. Gajah Tunggal's EBITDA

margin increased to 15% in the six months ended June 30, 2012, from 11% in the same period of

2011.

We still need a better understanding of Gajah Tunggal's growth strategy for 2013-2015, and

of how different funding options could affect the company's leverage. Gajah Tunggal acquired a

parcel of industrial land for about US$108 million in the second quarter of 2012. While high,

the amount seems to reflect the current prices in the area. The company plans to increase its

production of truck and bus radial tires over the next three years.

Liquidity

Gajah Tunggal's liquidity is "adequate", as defined in our criteria. We expect the company's

liquidity sources to exceed its liquidity uses by about 1.2x in the next 12 months. Our

liquidity assessment incorporates the following factors and assumptions:

-- Sources of liquidity include our expectation of funds from operations (FFO) of IDR1.1

trillion-IDR1.2 trillion over the next 12 months and Gajah Tunggal's cash balance of IDR677.2

billion as of June 30, 2012.

-- The company also has about IDR181 billion in short-term investments. But we only consider

50% of the value of these investments in our liquidity assessment to reflect their possible lack

of marketability.

-- We believe Gajah Tunggal's 25.5% stake in Jakarta stock exchange-listed PT Polychem

Indonesia Tbk. (not rated) as of June 30, 2012, provides marginal additional support

to the company's liquidity.

-- Uses of liquidity include our expectation of working capital requirements of IDR250

billion-IDR300 billion and capital expenditure of about IDR500 billion-IDR600 billion.

-- Liquidity needs also include a repayment of about IDR180 billion of the initial

outstanding principal amount on Gajah Tunggal's 2009 restructured bond due by July 21, 2013, and

IDR225 billion of accrued interest. The company repaid about US$11.5 million of the bond in July

2012.

-- We also factor in about IDR50 billion of shareholder distribution over the next 12

months.

Outlook

The positive outlook reflects our expectation that Gajah Tunggal's financial risk profile

will strengthen over the next 18 months. We expect the company's cash flows to improve and its

free operating cash flows to be positive over the period.

We could raise the rating by one notch if we believe Gajah Tunggal's ratio of total debt to

EBITDA will stabilize at 2.5x-3x, with the ratio of FFO to total debt exceeding 20% and positive

free operating cash flows. This could happen if the company's annual revenue grows more than 8%

in 2012 and 2013, while its EBITDA margin remains above 12%. We view our upgrade trigger of the

total-debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 2.5x-3.0x as appropriate, given the company's volatile margins. An

upgrade assumes that Gajah Tunggal will not be more aggressive in dividend distribution or

engage in related-party transactions with its 49.7% shareholder Denham Pte Ltd. that could

weaken its cash flows or leverage. It also hinges on our better understanding of the company's

growth plan and the associated financing.

A downgrade seems less likely given our expectation of Gajah Tunggal's operating

performance. However, we could revise the outlook to stable if: (1) intense price competition or

rapidly increasing raw material prices result in revenue growth of less than 1% and a decline in

EBITDA margin to below 10%, such that Gajah Tunggal's total-debt-to-EBITDA ratio exceeds 3.5x;

(2) the company's liquidity deteriorates quickly because of a rapid increase in working capital

requirements or less favorable terms of trade with clients; or (3) Gajah Tunggal's capital

spending in 2012 significantly exceeds our expectation, resulting in a ratio of total debt to

total debt plus equity of more than 50% for a prolonged period.

Dummies Guide to Business VoIP

This is one of the worst times in the history of the last century to be looking for a traditional job that will allow you to work nine to five; given the fact that unemployment is at an all time high in most countries and work is scarce. For this reason, many people are finding that entrepreneurship is the best way to make sure that you always have employment and an income.

However, in order to become your own productive source of income, you need to make sure that your small business is able to grow, which is why you may want to look into business VoIP. The only way to help a small business thrive and start to achieve big goals is why finding ways to be thrifty at first which is what company?s such as Apple have been doing for year. There are ways to get the type of services you need and still keep your budget low if you look into the right type of hosted business VoIP.

By taking your time and investigating your options you can make sure that you get the phone service that you need for your small business and help make your monthly business budget achievable. In fact, it has been estimated that small businesses tend to save anywhere from 50% up to 80% on their business telephone system simply by choosing to use cloud VoIP business solutions over a traditional PBX system.

The best part is that with a small business VoIP you can still have many of the same features such as free numbers, free calls, call recording, conferencing, a switchboard, music on hold, and plenty of other great perks. In addition, you can expect to receive the same quality phone system with the right hardware for your hosted VoIP.

This is due to the fact that not only do the old fashioned PBX systems often cost more than virtual PBX, but they also are not able to offer half of the functionality that new IP phone systems can. In fact, many small businesses that think that business VoIP is out of their price range have looked at systems that make it impractical to implement at more than one office.

With the new cloud VoIP, however, you can be connected at multiple locations for one low price making outsourcing and other similar needs easy and efficient. Now thanks to the switchboard that is built into a modern hosted VoIP and the auto attendant services you can use the same number for multiple offices. What happens is that clients only need one number in order to reach a central office at which point they are directed to different countries, states, and even mobile phones since hosted VoIP works over the internet and no matter where you have to route the call there is not an extra cost.

Thus, you can work from your home and your staff and can work from any location and still be connected allowing you flexibility in terms of partners and potential outsourcing to make your business much more economical. In fact, if you use a hosted VoIP you can even switch the call in the middle of it and is a very important feature for those who often do business on the phone.

This means you could literally pick up a call in the office and then take it on your mobile as you head out the door which is just one of the many unique and fun perks of choosing to purchase business phone service from a company that offers hosted VoIP.

Audit the fed? Gold standard? Five new things in GOP platform.

Party leaders may say they haven't read the GOP platform, but it is an important safety valve for Republicans leery of the nominee. The 2012 edition has more than one nod to Ron Paul supporters.

By Linda Feldmann,?Staff writer / August 29, 2012

In this Aug. 25 photo, Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney and his vice presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan, arrive for a campaign rally in Powell, Ohio.

Evan Vucci/AP

Much has been made of the abortion plank in the Republican Party?s 2012 platform ? the part that calls for a human-life amendment to the Constitution that would outlaw all abortions, no exceptions.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Never mind that the Mitt Romney-Paul Ryan ticket would allow abortions in cases of rape, incest, and to protect the life and health of the mother. Or that it has become a time-honored tradition among party leaders to say they haven?t read the platform. (This year?s clocks in at 62 pages.) Or that maybe the GOP should consider a one-page platform, so that people will actually read it, as House Speaker John Boehner suggested at a luncheon hosted by The Christian Science Monitor on Monday.

The Republican platform represents an important safety valve for constituencies that may be a tad leery of the party?s nominee, as was the case four years ago with Sen. John McCain and is true now with Mr. Romney.?There are points that come straight from the playbook of libertarian Rep. Ron Paul, the only GOP primary challenger who has not fully endorsed Romney.

Last week, the tea-party-supporting group Freedom Works declared victory when it saw the platform content ? asserting that 11.5 of its 12 proposals had been included. (The platform calls for a tax system that is ?flatter,? but not the ?flat tax? FreedomWorks and other conservatives wanted.)

The human-life amendment was in the 2008 platform. But in the 2012 platform, adopted and released Tuesday, there are many new planks. Here?s a sample:

A call to audit the Federal Reserve

?Audit the Fed? is a rallying cry for Paul supporters and the tea party. As the Fed considers a third round of monetary stimulus, known as ?quantitative easing,? the calls for more transparency in Fed decision-making have become part of the larger conversation about how to strengthen the economic recovery without sparking inflation.

The Republican Party will ?work to advance substantive legislation? that brings transparency and accountability to the Federal Reserve, the platform says. The first step is through ?an annual audit of the Federal Reserve?s activities.?

A return to the gold standard?

Alongside ?Audit the Fed,? this is another long-standing proposal by Congressman Paul on monetary policy. In fact, the platform does not contain the phrase ?gold standard.? It refers to a commission established shortly after the inauguration of President Reagan in 1981 to ?consider the feasibility of a metallic basis for US currency.?

The panel advised against such a move. ?Now, three decades later, as we face the task of cleaning up the wreckage of the current administration?s policies, we propose a similar commission to investigate possible ways to set a fixed value for the dollar,? the platform says.

Romney has said that he would replace Ben Bernanke as Fed chairman, but hasn?t floated replacements, nor commented on the monetary policy planks of the platform.

Protecting access to ammunition

In the wake of?recent shooting rampages, calls have increased for legislation to ban high-capacity gun magazines, which allow dozens of bullets to be loaded at a time. In contrast with the 2008 Republican platform, the 2012 document stakes a position on access to ammunition.

?We oppose legislation that is intended to restrict our Second Amendment rights by limiting the capacity of clips or magazines or otherwise restoring the ill-considered Clinton gun ban,? the platform states.

The Clinton-era ban on assault weapons, enacted in 1994, included a ban on ?large capacity ammunition feeding devices.? The law expired in 2004.

Reinventing Medicare and Medicaid

The Romney-Ryan proposal to?reform the twin federal health-care entitlements for seniors, the poor, and the disabled is now in black and white in the 2012 platform.

?The first step is to move the two programs away from their current unsustainable defined-benefit entitlement model to a fiscally sound defined-contribution model,? the platform says. ?This is the only way to limit costs and restore consumer choice for patients and introduce competition.?

Medicare moves to a ?premium-support? model, a voucher-like system in which seniors use their government subsidy to purchase private health insurance or traditional Medicare. Medicaid becomes a block-grant program, in which the federal government gives a defined amount to each state, which then uses the money as it sees fit toward insuring the poor and disabled.

The platform also hints at an increase in the eligibility age for Medicare, currently 65.

?Without disadvantaging retirees or those nearing retirement, the age [of] eligibility for Medicare must be made more realistic in terms of today?s longer life span,? it says.

No more ?leaks for political purposes?

In some places, the platform reads like a primal scream against the Obama administration. Exhibit A is the killing of Osama bin Laden, a huge, undisputed victory for the president that Republicans have been trying to diminish. Bin Laden is not mentioned explicitly in the platform, but information leaks surrounding the operation that left him dead have given Republicans the hook they need.

CONVENTION WATCH: 2 churches, attack dog Ryan

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Around the 2012 Republican National Convention and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details to you:

___

2 CHURCHES, 1 CREED

Paul Ryan touched on his Catholic faith and Mitt Romney's Mormon faith in accepting the Republican nomination for vice president.

"Mitt and I also go to different churches. But in any church, the best kind of preaching is done by example. And I've been watching that example," Ryan said. "The man who will accept your nomination is prayerful and faithful and honorable. Not only a defender of marriage, he offers an example of marriage at its best. Not only a fine businessman, he's a fine man, worthy of leading this optimistic and good-hearted country.

"Our different faiths come together in the same moral creed," Ryan continued. "We believe that in every life there is goodness; for every person, there is hope. Each one of us was made for a reason, bearing the image and likeness of the Lord of Life."

RYAN ON STIMULUS

In a speech assailing Barack Obama, vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan called the stimulus spending "a case of political patronage, corporate welfare and cronyism" at its worst.

But the Wisconsin lawmaker himself asked for stimulus funds in his district shortly after Congress approved the plan. Those pleas included letters to Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis seeking stimulus grant money for two Wisconsin energy conservation companies. One firm received $20.3 million, according to federal records.

GOP DIVERSITY

Condoleezza Rice got a huge roar of approval from fellow Republicans when she recounted her life story, the story of a little girl who "grows up in Jim Crow Birmingham ? the most segregated big city in America."

"Her parents can't take her to a movie theater or a restaurant," remembered the former secretary of state, who is black. "But they make her believe that even though she can't have a hamburger at the Woolworth's lunch counter, she can be president of the United States. And she becomes the secretary of state."

Just moments later, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez spoke in startlingly similar terms about her own childhood, remembering that: "Growing up, I never imagined a girl from a border town could one day become a governor. But this is America." And then switching to Spanish she added: "Y, en America todo es posible."

Republicans are increasingly worried about their ability to attract minority voters and they have highlighted a series of speakers from diverse backgrounds.

Both Rice and Martinez were mentioned at various times as possible vice presidential picks, but both insisted they were not interested.

RYAN GOES ON ATTACK

Paul Ryan is giving voters a vivid image of the nation's unemployment crisis.

If everyone now out of work stood in single file, he says, "that unemployment line would stretch the length of the entire American continent."

"You would think that any president, whatever his party, would make job creation, and nothing else, his first order of economic business," Ryan told GOP delegates. "But this president didn't do that. Instead, we got a long, divisive, all-or-nothing attempt to put the federal government in charge of health care."

Ryan's acceptance speech Wednesday night stands as one of the fiercest attacks on President Barak Obama's record in a convention flush with harsh words.

Leading such attacks is a traditional role for the No. 2 candidate on a ticket.

PIZZA WITH 'PAPA'

With his grandkids piled around him and a table full of pizza, Mitt Romney watched Wednesday's convention speeches from his hotel room in Tampa.

On Thursday, Romney's 18 grandkids can watch their "Papa" accept his party's nomination for president.

___

PINK PROTEST

As Paul Ryan was in the midst of an attack-dog speech accepting the vice presidential nomination, he was disrupted by a pink banner and a yelling protester. The protester, apparently from the group Code Pink, was escorted out as some in the crowd started shouting "U-S-A."

___

CONDI'S FORMAL; CROWD'S NOT

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice keeps insisting she's not a politician and not interested in elected office. Indeed, her tone at the Republican National Convention was markedly different than that of the other speakers.

For example, few of the speakers ? mostly elected officials and longtime politicians ? begin by greeting the boisterous crowd as "distinguished delegates."

Rice, of course, is America's former top diplomat and a longtime academic, and she's known for a more formal speaking style, as befits her professions.

Yet despite the academic cast to her words, her address was overtly political, as she described for the crowd what she called a nation at risk of falling into decline and told the crowd that America cannot "lead from behind."

And the crowd did not respond formally ? instead giving her several rounds of clamorous standing ovations.

? Sally Buzbee

___

THE EVANGELICAL VOTE

Former pastor and one-time presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee says he wants to clear the air about whether "guys like me ? an evangelical ? would only support a fellow evangelical."

"Of the four people on the two tickets, the only self-professed evangelical is Barack Obama," Huckabee told the GOP convention. "And he supports changing the definition of marriage; believes that human life is disposable and expendable at any time in the womb, even beyond the womb; and tells people of faith that they must bow their knees to the god of government and violate their faith and conscience in order to comply with what he calls health care."

Referring to the Republican nominee's Mormon faith, former Arkansas Gov. Huckabee said: "I care far less as to where Mitt Romney takes his family to church than I do about where he takes this country."

___

TATTOO PRESIDENT

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty compares President Barack Obama to a youthful indiscretion.

"I've come to realize that Barack Obama is the tattoo president. Like a big tattoo, it seemed cool when we were young," Pawlenty said in his convention speech Wednesday night. "But later on, that decision doesn't look so good, and you wonder: what was I thinking?"

REMEMBER MAINE

"As goes Maine, so goes the nation!"

That was the chant of about 200 supporters of Ron Paul on Wednesday, still smarting over a ruling that prevented 10 Paul delegates from Maine from being seated at the convention.

But instead of taking their protest to the convention floor, the group from Texas, Maine, Nevada and Colorado marched in the hallway outside the arena repeating the chant. A convention panel switched the Maine delegates from Paul to Mitt Romney last week, saying the Paul delegates were elected in violation of party and parliamentary rules.

Adding to the anger of Paul's delegates, the convention adopted new rules Tuesday designed to limit the ability of insurgent candidates win delegates in 2016.

Wearing badges that stated "Remember Maine 2012," the group was trailed by news media, cameras and security who guided the marchers to the exits without confrontation. They continued their march outside the arena toward nearby streets.

"We played by the rules, and they changed the rules," said Sherry Kornahrens, a Paul supporter from Reno, Nev.

ONE FOR THE GIPPER

Nothing tugs at the hearts of the GOP faithful like invoking the name of the late Ronald Reagan. And Sen. Rand Paul didn't disappoint.

Paul recounted author Paul Kengor's story of an 11-year-old boy in a small Illinois town coming home from a basketball game at the local YMCA one night to find his father sprawled out in the snow, drunk, dead to the world.

"The boy stood over his father for a minute or two," said Paul. "He simply wanted to let himself in the door and pretend his dad wasn't there. Instead, he grabbed a fistful of overcoat and heaved his dad to the bedroom, away from the weather's harm and neighbors' attention."

And then the kicker:

"This young boy became the man ? Ronald Reagan ? whose sunny optimism and charisma shined so brightly that it cured the malaise of the late '70s, a confidence that beamed so broadly that it pulled us through a serious recession, and a faith that tugged so happily at all hearts that a generation of Democrats became Republicans."

A NATION OF IMMIGRANTS

America is a land of immigrants. And pride in that heritage has been all over the place during the last two nights of the GOP convention. Speaker after speaker told stories of family roots beyond America ? and of how the struggles faced by those immigrants helped forge their own values.

For New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, it was reminiscing about his Irish father and his Sicilian mother (she was the family's real force, he noted).

For South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, it was recounting how her Indian immigrant parents instilled in their children a deep gratitude that they were growing up in America.

And for South Dakota Sen. John Thune, it was the memory of how his grandfather ? one of two Norwegian brothers ? came to America in 1906 knowing how to say only two things in English, "apple pie and coffee."

At Ellis Island, immigration officials decided their last name ? Gjelsvik ? was too difficult and asked them to change it. They picked "Thune," the name of the farm where they worked in Norway.

"Like many Americans," Thune said, "I've been blessed by the hard work and sacrifice of those who've come before."

It was a refrain that filled the hall again and again.

"He'll definitely shake things up." ? Gary Inmon of San Antonia, Texas.

"We shouldn't be afraid of big ideas." ? Scott Baker of Willis, Texas, an alternate delegate who says Ryan bring big ideas on Medicare and Social Security.

"It's nice to have someone from my generation, and someone who's a Catholic, and a conservative. I can very much identify with him." ? Patrick Burns of Marietta, Ga.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

Oops.

A copy of Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul's convention speech, emailed to reporters by organizers, incorrectly identified the speaker as Ron Paul, the Texas congressman who challenged Mitt Romney for the GOP presidential nomination.

Ron Paul, who is Rand' father, isn't speaking at the convention, though a video tribute to him was played for delegates Wednesday evening. Ron Paul said he has no plans to endorse Romney, and some of his supporters caused a stir on the convention floor Tuesday over new rules that could impede future insurgent candidates like Paul.

Convention organizers later sent out a corrected copy of the speech, just minutes after delegates watched a video featuring another Republican father-son duo: Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.

BUSH MEMORIES

The two Bush presidents ? George H.W. and son George W. ? offered their personal recollections about their days in the White House in a video appearance at the Republican convention Wednesday night.

Neither man attended in person.

In the video, the son remembered a visit to the Oval Office by Russian President Vladimir Putin and how impressed he was. The father remembered former "Saturday Night Live" cast member Dana Carvey's imitations of him ? and a funny performance in the White House.

Also remembering their White House days and past conventions were first ladies Barbara Bush and Laura Bush.

RYAN A GOP DARLING

Paul Ryan takes the stage tonight as the Republican Party's vice presidential candidate and its darling. About a week after Mitt Romney named Ryan his running mate, an AP-GfK poll found that 63 percent of Republicans held a favorable impression of the congressman. Just 15 percent held an unfavorable one. Here's a look at which groups of Republicans hold him in particularly high esteem:

Conservative Republicans (70 percent favorable) give him rave reviews, including 47 percent who hold a "very favorable" opinion. That figure outpaces Romney's "very favorable" ratings among the group (37 percent).

Among moderate and liberal Republicans, 50 percent have a positive take on Ryan.

Tea party backers are particularly fond of Ryan. His favorability among supporters of that political movement stands at 79 percent.

Older Republicans (72 percent favorable among those age 45 and up) are more positive than Republicans of Ryan's own generation (53 percent among those under age 45).

___

RAND PAUL: NO FEAR

Sen. Rand Paul brought many delegates to their feet with a rousing call for both political parties to put aside fear and stand up for Americans' rights.

"Republicans and Democrats must replace fear with confidence ? confidence that no terrorist, and no country, will ever conquer us if we remain steadfast to the principles of our founding documents," said Paul, whose father is Rep. Ron Paul, the former presidential candidate with a pool of fervent followers.

"We have nothing to fear except our own unwillingness to defend what is naturally ours, our God-given rights," Rand Paul declared. "We have nothing to fear that should cause us to forget or relinquish our rights as free men and women."

His father, who carried 190 delegates at the GOP convention, didn't speak but was the subject of a tribute video.

MCCAIN STILL IN THE FIGHT

The GOP's 2008 presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain, returned to the convention stage to excoriate Barack Obama for failing to back Iranians and Syrians who've given their lives in the fight against oppression.

McCain says the president missed a historic opportunity by failing to throw America's "full moral support" behind Iranian revolutionaries trying to oust "a brutal dictatorship that terrorizes the Middle East and threatens the world."

And he says Obama "is not being true to our values" when he abandons Syrians to "a savage and unfair fight."

"The demand for our leadership in the world has never been greater," McCain said. "People don't want less of America. They want more."

? Connie Cass ?Twitter http://twitter.com/ConnieCass

___

STAY AWAY, BROTHER

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush says his brother, the former president, is smart to stay away from the Republican convention because he will just become more of a target for President Barack Obama.

"The president has spent a lot of time and energy around this notion that 'I can't do anything about it. It's all Bush's fault. You know I'm trying, but it's not working because it's Bush's fault,'" Bush told ABC News. "Now we're in year four of a presidency, think back into American history, think of a president that is blaming his predecessor in the fourth year. So why encourage the bad behavior and I think my brother is smart to stay away."

___

OBAMA NOT WATCHING

White House press secretary Jay Carney says President Barack Obama hasn't watched any Republican convention speeches because "he has other things to do." Obama's campaign staff, however, has apparently been watching closely.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters on Air Force One Wednesday that a theme invoked by many convention speakers was "built on a house of lies." She specifically cited what she said were distortions of Obama's "you didn't build that" comment and his positions on Medicare and welfare.

Psaki praised Ann Romney's speech, saying she did "a great job" in telling the public about her relationship with her husband.

"She gave a very powerful speech about her husband and their family and the strength of their bond," Psaki said.

ISAAC LOOMS

Even though Isaac has moved beyond Florida, the hurricane's still having an impact on the Republicans meeting in Tampa.

Presidential nominee Mitt Romney is considering a visit to hard-hit Gulf Coast areas after the storm passes.

Convention activities on Monday were canceled because of the approaching storm, but GOP officials say they have no plans to make further changes to the schedule.

Several speakers Wednesday night mentioned the hurricane at the beginning of their remarks and promoted Red Cross relief efforts.

Zacks initiates coverage of University General Health System with an Outperform rating

Steven Ralston, CFA

Zacks has initiated coverage of University General Health System (UGHS - Analyst Report: OTCQB) with an Outperform rating and a target of $0.58. University General Health System is a multi-specialty health care provider that owns and operates a regional healthcare network in the Houston metropolitan area. The network is comprised of a core hospital and several complementary healthcare facilities, including eight hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs), one ambulatory surgical center (ASC) and three senior living facilities. Management is executing an aggressive growth plan to acquire additional facilities, further developing the company?s footprint in Houston. The company?s business model consists of the delivery of concierge, patient-oriented care by motivated physicians which currently own over 46% of the company.

Management?s strategic growth plan entails the creation and operation of regional health care networks developed around general acute-care host hospitals in other metropolitan areas, replicating the process employed in Houston. Each network is anticipated to be built through the acquisition of a host hospital and ancillary healthcare facilities within a radius such that they can operate under the hospital?s licenses as HOPDs. Each locally concentrated system would consist of a core hospital, along with HOPDs, ASCs, procedure facilities, diagnostic imaging centers, physical therapy clinics, among others. By consolidating health care providers into HOPDs, the University General network will benefit from higher reimbursement rates. In addition, the company?s physician-centric model allows the network to capture incremental revenues for procedures referred within the system. Initially, management plans to expand geographically within Texas.

During 2011, the University General acquired three senior living facilities, a support services organization that provides billing and other administrative services (Autimis) and a luxury hospitality service provider and facility management company (Sybaris). In addition, the company acquired 51% of the support services company that manages six senior living facilities and 15% of Mainland Surgery Center. So far in 2012, University General has acquired the Baytown Endoscopy Center, 1960 Digital Imaging (a diagnostic imaging and physical therapy center), three clinics (diagnostic imaging, physical therapy and sleep) located at the Kingwood Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Center and the Robert Horry Center for Sports and Physical Rehabilitation Center. University General Health System is expected to continue acquiring ancillary healthcare facilities in the Houston area in order to help fill out in its health care network, including free-standing emergency rooms, ambulatory surgical centers, diagnostic imaging centers, physician practices, post-acute skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and other complementary facilities.

Through acquisitions and organic growth, total revenues increased 29.2% in 2011 to $72.5 million. Continuing the trend, during the first half of 2012, total revenues advanced 44.5% to $48.2 million over the comparable first half of last year. The company is also reporting double digit increases in the average daily inpatient census at University General Hospital.

Our price target of $0.58 is based on price-to-sales (P/S) and enterprise value-to-EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) valuation methodologies. University General is a small-capitalization company with a revenue profile that should experience rapid growth both through internal growth as the company?s hospital network is better utilized and through the execution of management?s aggressive acquisition strategy. The growing revenue stream has already manifested itself into positive earnings in the second quarter of 2012. Based on historical norms for similar specialty providers of hospital-related services companies, we expect UGHS to trade in an EV/EBITDA valuation range between 9.3 and 6.0, and specifically, our target is based on UGHS attaining the first quartile valuation benchmark of an 8.5 EV-to-EBITDA ratio due to the positive news flow of the successful implementation of management?s growth strategies. Also, valuation based on the price-to-sales metric confirms and reinforces the $0.58 price target. We expect UGHS to trade in a P/S valuation range between 2.0 and 1.0, which is also based on historical valuations of similar companies. The first quartile P/S valuation benchmark is 1.8 or $0.58 per share. Given management?s stated business plan of becoming a creator, owner and operator of regional health care networks in multiple metropolitan areas, University General is expected to expand its revenue base and level of profitability significantly.

European court nixes Italy embryo screening ban

ROME (AP) ? Italy's ban on screening embryos for diseases before they are implanted in a womb violates the rights of a couple whose first child was born with cystic fibrosis, the European Court of Human Rights ruled Tuesday.

The court's finding in favor of the Italian couple triggered fresh calls among Italian politicians for a less restrictive law regulating artificial procreation.

Following fierce lobbying by pro-Vatican centrist parties, Italy's Parliament passed a law in 2004 that allows couples to use in vitro fertilization for infertility but bans pre-implantation diagnosis of embryos. Vatican teaching forbids artificial procreation methods.

The court concluded it was "inconsistent" that Italians could abort a fetus with defects but not test an embryo before implantation, as the couple had wanted to do. The couple who challenged the law before the Strasbourg court had discovered they are healthy carriers of cystic fibrosis when their daughter was born in 2006 with the inherited disorder.

When the mother became pregnant again in 2010, she had the fetus aborted when it was found to have cystic fibrosis. The couple then hoped to use medically-assisted procreation with genetic screening to avoid transmitting the disease to their children. But Italy's law forbids that, so they took their quest to the court.

The court noted that the Italian government was trying to "avoid the risk of eugenic abuses" with the law but said it interfered with the couple's "right to respect for their private and family life."

Italy has one of Europe's strictest rules for artificial procreation. It bans the donation of eggs or sperm as well as the use of surrogate mothers, and limits infertility treatment to heterosexual couples who are married or who have been living together for several years.

Italian lawmakers said it was time to change the law.

"(This ruling is the) latest confirmation of the unconstitutionality of this law, which doesn't at all protect the rights and health of citizens," said Antonio Palagiano, a lawmaker with the centrist Italy of Values party.

Similar statements came from Parliament's two largest parties, one from the center-right, the other from the center-left.

In 2009, Italy's Constitutional Court struck down one of the most contested sections of the law, which had said that only three embryos could be created at one time and that all three must be implanted.

The law was passed under conservative leader Silvio Berlusconi but even his allies urged Tuesday that it be revised.

"It's further demonstration of the fact that forcing a law, often determined through ideological reasons in one sense or another, never works," said Fabrizio Cicchitto, one of Berlusconi's closest political allies.

Guest Post: Step 9 ? Nurture Happiness and Foster Resilience ...

By?Janine Kovac

When my husband and I first found out that we had a high-risk twin pregnancy?with 50/50 odds that we would lose the twins?I realized that my current set of coping skills and strategies were inadequate. I couldn?t just sit back and ?hope for the best? and I couldn?t wish for a different kind of pregnancy or a different kind of life; I needed a way to accept my current situation and if possible, even learn to enjoy it. I turned to Christine Carter?s work with the Greater Good Science Center, specifically the Raising Happiness blog and her book Raising Happiness?with occasional insights that I pulled from cognitive science.

We started with by taking care of ourselves first and by building our social support. When our boys were born in December instead of April (when they were due), we found comfort in our growth mindsets. In my last guest post, ?Step 8: Enjoy the Present Moment,? the twins were home and healthy and I was wondering if the metaphors I used for time?make time, spend time, lose time?were actually affecting my ability to manage my days with less stress and more joy.

Step 9 from Raising Happiness (?Rig Their Environment for Happiness?) presents the paradox that parents are faced with. On the one hand, we want to raise our children in an environment that maximizes their potential for a joyful life (and chapters 1 through 8 provide concrete ways to do this). At the same time, we can?t stick our children in a bubble with the hopes that nothing bad will happen to them.

To address the step, I had intended to write about the twins coming home after three months in the newborn intensive care unit (the NICU) and how we worried our way through the first year. We had weekly meetings with infant-development specialists and monthly medical appointments that monitored the twins? delayed development. I wanted to capture the essence of the paradox that Christine describes in her chapter: while there are definite steps we can take to positively impact our children?s happiness and resilience, our control over our children?s environment is limited. I had the post all mapped out.

But then my husband?s dad died.

A few years ago my father-in-law had been diagnosed with a rare and stubborn form of cancer. This past Christmas we came to understand that his options for further treatment were limited. Over Easter my father-in-law entered into hospice care.

After spending spring break with her grandparents, my five-year-old daughter asked me,
?Is Grandpa going to get better??

?No,? I had to tell her.

?Is Grandpa going to die??

?Yes,? I had to tell her.

Here it was, in a spontaneous conversation with my daughter: the reason I needed Chapter 9. We can model a growth mindset for our children. We can practice gratitude and optimism as a family. We can have happiness routines that foster healthy living. But Grandpa?s cancer is terminal.

?I have some books for you,? the director of my daughter?s preschool told me when she heard the news. She sent me home an armful of books from the center?s lending library. They had titles such as: When Someone You Love Has Cancer: A Guide to Help Kids Cope and I?ll Hold You and You?ll Hold Me.

?I wish I didn?t have a need for such an extensive collection,? she sighed.

One book in particular, When Dinosaurs Die: A Guide to Understanding Death, became an instant favorite with my daughter.

?Losing someone who is special to you is very hard to understand,? the book stated simply. And: ?When someone you love dies, there is no right or wrong way to feel.?

Every page depicted cartoon scenes of life and death: the burial of a pet, a sick parent, a car accident, a memorial service for the Grandpa dinosaur (?Morris Saurus.?)? There was even a cartoon panel with two little baby dinosaur ?preemies? hooked up to tubes and wires in little incubators.

?Just like the boys!? my daughter exclaimed, recognizing the NICU equipment even in dinosaur cartoons. We talked about how the boys were healthy now, but that they were very little and sick when they were born.

?We should give this book to Grandma,? she said one night after we read it for what seemed like the fortieth time. ?So she won?t be so sad about Grandpa.?

As I was leaving for the airport to attend the memorial, my daughter reminded me, ?Did you pack the dinosaur book for Grandma??

On the night after the funeral, friends and family came to the house to remember the man who had been uncle, brother, father, neighbor, and grandfather, among so many other roles. We cried. We laughed. We ordered pizza and watched Grandpa?s favorite movie, an obscure spaghetti Western.

The dinosaur book sat on an end table where it happened to catch the attention of some of the younger grandchildren. I watched as one by one, they nabbed the book, curled up in a corner and flipped slowly through various topics such as, ?Why Does Someone Die?? ?Feelings about Death,? and ?Ways to Remember Someone.? None of the children said anything to anyone. They just silently read through the book, each child leaving it on the table where he or she had found it.

The other day (for the purposes of writing this post), I pulled the book out again. When my daughter saw it, she wanted me to read it to her at bedtime. Afterwards, we played the game suggested on one of the last pages: ?I remember when??

?I remember when Grandpa came to visit and read books to you,? I began.

?I remember Grandpa?s birthday party,? she said.

?I remember the cards he used to make for us.?

We did a few more rounds of ?I remember when?? and then I kissed her and turned off the light.

I?m so sad to have lost my father-in-law. And it breaks my heart to know that my sons won?t know him as we knew him?the man who was my husband?s best man at our wedding, the man who sent thank-you candy to the boys? NICU nurses and read doll books to his granddaughter.

But while we are sad, we are also grateful that we have friends who recommend books to help us talk about what we?re feeling. We?re proud that our daughter?s sadness prompted her to empathize with Grandma. We?re tickled that a little thing like a book in the right place at the right time can remind us to share the happy memories of our loved ones. That?s the real message behind Chapter 9?that the tools we use to nurture happiness are the same ones we use to foster resilience.

Me and all I stood for.
