MLB: Washington 6, St. Louis 4 (10 inn.)

Published: Sept. 29, 2012 at 11:55 PM

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Kurt Suzuki smacked a go-ahead, two-run double in the 10th inning Saturday and Washington moved closer to a division crown with a 6-4 win over St. Louis.

With Cardinals forced an extra inning when Pete Kozma singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth, went to third on David Descalso's pinch-hit single and scored on Jon Jay's sacrifice fly.

But the Nationals came right back in the 10th. Adam Laroche drew a leadoff walk from Sam Freeman (0-2) and went to second on Roger Bernadina's sacrifice.

Fernando Salas came in to pitch and retired Ian Desmond for the second out. The Cards elected to intentionally walk Danny Espinoza to get to Suzuki, but the Nats catcher made them pay by blistering a pitch into the left-center field gap for a two-run double.

The victory reduced Washington's magic number to clinch the National League East to one.

Michael Morse cracked a grand slam and Drew Storen (3-1) earned the victory despite allowing the tying run in the ninth.

Kozma finished 3-for-4 with two RBI for St. Louis, whose magic number for an NL wild card spot remained at three.

5 Tips about Preventing Hearing difficulties | Skinsla Health

Hearing loss, that was once associated with the elderly, is starting to become a very common problem in youngsters and baby boomers. Experience of loud songs for extended time frame tops their list of noises induced hearing difficulties.

There are Three or more types of hearing difficulties, categorized by the part of the even system which is affected.

Conductive hearing difficulties occurs when appears are not effectively conducted over the ear. This kind of loss is actually characterized by a broad reduction in appear level or the inability to hear faint appears. It is often caused by a blockage inside the ear, like wax. Various other causes can be an ear infection or hypersensitivity that prevents sounds through traveling effectively in the middle ear.

Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when there is damage to the middle ear or the neurological pathways of the ear. Get older and experience loud noises are one of the factors in which contribute to this kind of hearing loss.

Mixed hearing loss is a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, which occurs when there is damage to both the internal and outside ear areas. This type of hearing difficulties can be averted.

The degree of hearing difficulties refers to the thresholds from which soft tones can be observed. There are 5 main categories: normal reduction, mild reduction, moderate reduction, severe reduction and deep loss. Any hearing test can determine the degree of hearing difficulties you have.

Here are some ideas for preventing hearing difficulties.

1. Many people turn up the amount on their tv or radio stations in an attempt to block out some other noises. All of us live in a loud environment. In the event you turn up the amount to the degree that you can will no longer hear outdoors noises it is probably too loud. If others can hear the appear from your wireless earbuds or headsets, it means the amount is too large.

2. Ear bud headsets have been found to be more detrimental than over-the-ear type headphone. Earphones creates much more impact since they are closer to the inner ear. The main benefit of over-the-ear style headsets is that they get noise termination that gets rid of background noises without having to show up the volume.

Three or more. Reduce exposure time to loud noises. This includes various noise like lawn mowers, foods mixers, curly hair dryer etc.

4. Employ ear protection like ear plugs as well as ear muffs wherever exposed to dangerous noise levels, be it at property, at work and also at play.

5. As a parent, instruct your child to listen to music as well as television in a safe stage.

Map locates Kismayo, Somalia

(AP) ? Al-Shabab rebels pulled out of a key port city in southern Somalia, the group said Saturday, a day after Kenyan troops invaded and marched toward the city center and seaside port that long served as the militants' key source of funding, officials said.

Residents in Kismayo said they woke to find police and government headquarters abandoned by the militants, sparking a looting spree of the government and police headquarters.

"They withdrew from here last night. The town is not under anyone's control now," Mohamed Hassan, a resident, said. "People feel some relief now. We hope no more fighting will take place."

The withdrawal came about 24 hours after Kenyan forces made a beach landing and as inland troops from Somalia and Kenya moved toward the port city from the west.

"Looting and chaos is going on here. Thugs are taking advantage of the vacuum," Maryan Hussein, another resident, said. "The abandoned houses are being ransacked and the streets are occupied by people carrying belongings."

Col. Cyrus Oguna, a spokesman for the Kenyan military, said five al-Shabab fighters were killed in a battle overnight. Two commanders were killed in the fighting, the military said.

He said the Kenyan forces are still verifying the reports that al-Shabab had pulled out of Kismayo. "For now we are treating it as a theory," he said.

The Kenyan troops landed by boats in the northern part of Kismayo on Friday and moved toward the port, he said. He said that al-Shabab lost "many, many militants, including some key commanders" during battles on Friday that involved helicopter gunships.

Al-Shabab used Twitter to announce the news it was leaving Kismayo.

"Last night, after more than 5 years the Islamic administration in Kismayo closed its office," the tweet said. "Kismayo shall be transformed from a peaceful city governed by Islamic Shari'ah into a battle-zone between Muslims" and invaders.

Al-Shabab found little popular support in Kismayo because of the conservative brand of Islam it tried to impose on residents. Al-Shabab carried out public executions, whippings and amputations as punishments, and enforced a conservative dress code.

Al-Shabab was forced out of Mogadishu in August 2011 and lost one of its major sources of funding when it could no longer tax businesses in the city's main market. Since then the taxes al-Shabab charged on goods coming into Kismayo's port were seen as its last major funding source.

As it no longer holds any major cities in Somalia, al-Shabab is expected to operate more as an insurgent force that carries out suicide and roadside bomb attacks.

Liquidate Fannie & Freddie: Sheila Bair's Rx for the Financial ...

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

In her new book, Bull by the Horns, former FDIC Chair Sheila Bair gives a detailed account of the 2008 financial crisis and its aftermath. As you've probably heard by now, Bair is unfettered in her criticism of Tim Geithner, calling him the "bail-outer in chief" and suggesting the Treasury Secretary was more worried about protecting Citigroup (C) vs. protecting taxpayers.

But the book is more that just a Geithner-slam, even if that's been the bulk of coverage so far. Bair offering a series of recommendations for how to reform and strengthen the financial system, including abolishing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

"The hybrid nature of Fannie and Freddie led to disastrous consequences," Bair writes. "Ultimately, both institutions need to be liquidated."

Given the role Fannie and Freddie play in the housing market ? bigger today vs. before the 2008 crisis -- that's easier said vs. done, as we discuss in the accompanying video.

"There's no agreement on what to do with the GSEs," Bair says. "It's a broader problem with housing policy generally, there's no consensus."

Bair's recommendation for getting rid of Fannie and Freddie is to "do it gradually," and start by forcing the GSEs to charge the banks higher fees for taking the interest rate and credit risk of 30-year mortgages off their books.

"At some point, the market will find it more economically efficient to fund mortgages themselves than pay higher guarantee fees to the government," she says. "That's the simplest way to do it."

While critical of the GSEs, Bair rejects the notion they were somehow primarily responsible for the housing boom and resulting crisis.

There was a "symbiotic relationship" between Wall Street and the GSEs, which were big buyers of mortgage-backed securities, she says. "But this idea we forced Wall Street executives and traders to make all this money because we wanted poor people to have mortgages?that's laughable analysis."

As for why Fannie and Freddie weren't addressed by the Dodd-Frank legislation, Bair's view is reforming the GSEs was "too much to bite off at same time" policymakers were trying to address re-regulating the financial system.

And of course, the "symbiotic relationship" she describes is a big reason why Fannie and Freddie were put into conservatorship in 2008 rather than forced into liquidation. Given Wall Street firms ? not to mention sovereign wealth funds ? were big holders of Fannie Mae's and Freddie Mac's debt, almost everyone had a vested interest in keeping the GSEs intact, or at least not forcing creditors to take a haircut.

Abolishing the GSEs is just one of Bair's recommendations to reform the financial system. As discussed in the accompanying video and part 2 of this interview, others include:

  • Breaking up the Mega-banks.
  • Raise capital requirements for banks.
  • Abolish the OCC and merge the SEC and CFTC.
  • End the 'revolving door' between Wall Street and Washington.
  • Change the tax code to put equity financing on par with debt financing, and earned income on par with investment income.

A small college cancels ACS journal subscriptions, and ACS doesn't want to talk about it

A few weeks ago, Jenica Rogers, the library director at SUNY Potsdam, a small public college in upstate New York, wrote a blog post detailing how her library and chemistry department decided to cancel subscriptions to the journals published by the American Chemical Society due to unsustainable costs. Faculty at SUNY Potsdam agreed that it was worthwhile to forego immediate access to that content, even though it?s of high quality. Continued access to ACS journals would have used up 10% of the total library acquisitions budget. To make up for the loss of ACS journals they added subscriptions to journals from the Royal Society of Chemistry and other publishers.

The American Chemical Society is well known in library circles for having aggressive year-to-year price increases. Last year, my library cancelled its subscription to the ?all ACS journals? package in favor of a new, smaller, package of 16 ACS journals to avoid an effective 11% price jump on the ?all journals? package. The year before our cost for the ACS archive (pre-1995 journals) doubled as the ACS moved to a new pricing model. While prices for the smaller journal package held steady for us this year, I keep a list of things that we might need to cancel when (not if) prices increase faster than the library budget. I?m concerned that we will have to cancel this smaller journal package in favor of just a few ACS subscriptions sometime in the next few years. After several years of declining or steady library budgets, my library has made all of the ?easy? cuts we can in order to afford scholarly content from the ACS and other publishers: the book budget has been slashed, we?ve cancelled many magazines and newspapers, the student worker budget has been cut, we aren?t binding print journals anymore, etc. Other libraries are in a similar position where the only thing left to cut are journal subscriptions.

Many folks have responded to Potsdam?s move on library and chemistry blogs and other news sites (John Dupuis has a good list of posts and commentary). Some applaud their actions as standing up to the ?Goliath? of publishers. Others lament that their students will lose access to high quality research published by ACS. Few ask about the non-chemistry students who would loose access to their own discipline?s high quality research in order for Potsdam to afford the ACS subscriptions. Every time journal subscription costs go up faster than library budgets, something has to be cut.

For many folks, subscriptions to these journals were once considered un-cancelable. Perhaps we?ve been pushed to the point now where that is no longer the case.

In a recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education the author talked to Jenica, a chemistry faculty member, and reached out to the ACS about the issue, expanding on some of the issues raised in Jenica?s original blog post. The ACS seemed to say that they aren?t going to talk to us about this in the places where we talk about this:

?We find little constructive dialogue can be had on blogs and other listservs where logic, balance, and common courtesy are not practiced and observed,? Glenn S. Ruskin, the group?s director of public affairs, said in an e-mail message. ?As a matter of practice, ACS finds that direct engagement via telephone or face-to-face with individuals expressing concern over pricing or other related matters is the most productive means to finding common ground and resolution.?

This statement infuriated many mild mannered librarians. Librarians use blogs, listservs, and other new-fangled online communication tools to discuss library issues, to help each other out and to engage with publishers on issues of mutual interest.

After several chemistry librarians politely expressed their outrage and disappointment in the ACS on the chemical information societies listerv, Mr. Ruskin emailed a response, stating that a final sentence had been left off his quote:

?Therefore, we will not be offering any response to this blog posting or the conversation that has ensued.?

His explanation suggested that the ACS was not going to respond to Jenica?s blog post and this particular issue. I?m not sure that Mr. Ruskin?s clarification seems to help the matter. Whatever your feelings about the tone of Jenica?s blog post (or her previous posts about the ACS in which she has described herself as ?feeling pointy?), Mr. Ruskin is still saying that they aren?t going to talk about this issue in the places where librarians talk about issues like this.

Personally, I don?t blame Jenica for using blunt language and the occasional curse word when talking about ACS with friends and colleagues. I became a librarian because I love information, and I?m passionate about teaching students to access, understand and use the scientific literature. When publishers make it more difficult for students to access it by charging fees that we can no longer afford, I feel ?pointy? too. Just ask the librarians whose cubicles are next to mine.

Those of us struggling to provide our students and faculty with high quality research are frustrated that we don?t have partners on the other side of the table willing to engage with us in honest conversation about journal prices. We are left with few options: renew at the prices ACS is charging or cancel something. It isn?t a nice position to be in.

Talk to us, ACS. And I don?t mean by calling me privately. Engage with librarians and chemists about this issue on listservs and blogs. Open a dialog on what a reasonable pricing model would include. We know that you have good content, and we?re not expecting to access it for free. But when we can?t afford it anymore we are left with few options, and almost everyone loses. I would love to see a greater variety of journal package options (a package of 8 or 12 journals, for example) at a lower cost. I would like to see some honest figures about why my college?s cost per download is about 10 times the cost per download of our nearby university. I would also love to hear about how the aggressive price increases and higher-than-other-scholarly-societies subscription costs mesh with the mission statement of the ACS ?to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people.?

Don?t shut down the public conversation.

Honey bees fight back against Varroa

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The parasitic mite Varroa destructor is a major contributor to the recent mysterious death of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Genome Biology finds that specific proteins, released by damaged larvae and in the antennae of adult honey bees, can drive hygienic behavior of the adults and promote the removal of infected larvae from the hive.

V. destructor sucks the blood (hemolymph) of larval and adult bees leaving them weakened and reducing the ability of their immune systems to fight off infections. Not that honey bees have strong immune systems in the first place since they have fewer immunity genes than solitary insects such as flies and moths. These tiny mites can also spread viral disease between hosts. This double onslaught is thought to be a significant contributor to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).

But all is not lost -- honey bees have evolved a way to fight back: hygienic behavior where diseased or parasitized larvae are removed from their brood cells, and Varroa-sensitive hygienic behavior which they use to reduce the number of reproductive mites on remaining larvae.

To find exactly how bees respond to hive infections, researchers from Canada looked at the natural behavioral of bees in the presence of damaged larvae and compared this to protein differences in the larvae and adults. After scanning 1200 proteins the team found that several proteins, including LOC552009 (of unknown function but similar to ApoO), found in the antennae of adults were associated with both uncapping brood cells and the removal of larvae. Other proteins were involved in olfaction or in signal transduction, probably helping the adults find infected larvae amongst a brood.

In damaged larvae, transglutaminase, a protein involved in blood clotting, was upregulated, which appeared to be a key component in regulating the adult's behavior. Other proteins indicated adaptations to help fight infection, including chitin biosynthesis and immune responses.

Dr Leonard Foster from CHIBI at the University of British Columbia, who led this research said, "Bee keepers have previously focused on selecting bees with traits such as enhanced honey production, gentleness and winter survival. We have found a set of proteins which could be used to select colonies on their ability to resist Varroa mite infestation and can be used to find individuals with increased hygienic behavior. Given the increasing resistance of Varroa to available drugs this would provide a natural way of ensuring honey farming and potentially survival of the species."

Good Phishing Techniques Continue to Penetrate in Corporate ...

Think your company?s employees are savvy enough not to fall for phishing attacks? Well, think again. According to FireEye?s Advanced Threat Report, email-based attacks increased 56 percent in the first six months of 2012. Email-based advanced cyber attacks easily bypassed traditional signature-based security defenses, preying on naive users to install malicious files. Ashar Aziz, founder and CEO of FireEye, said in a release

Cybercriminals continue to evolve and refine their attack tactics to evade detection and use techniques that work. Spearphishing emails are on the rise because they work. Signature-based detection is ineffective against these constantly changing advanced attacks, so IT security departments need to add a layer of advanced threat protection to their security defenses.

FireEye may have come up with that additional layer. The company came up with a list of the top words used in successful spear-phishing attacks geared toward corporate networks. The report is not surprisingly titled ?Top Words Used in Spear Phishing Attacks to Successfully Compromise Enterprise Networks and Steal Data? and identifies the social engineering techniques cybercriminals use in email-based advanced cyber attacks. According to the report, the top words cybercriminals use create a sense of urgency, to trick unsuspecting recipients into downloading malicious files. The top word category used to evade traditional IT security defenses in email-based attacks relates to express shipping. The report pointed out that express shipping terms are included in about one quarter of attacks, including ?DHL,? ?UPS? and ?delivery.? Urgent terms such as ?notification? and ?alert? are included in about 10 percent of attacks. An example of a malicious attachment is ?UPS-Delivery-Confirmation-Alert_April-2012.zip.?

Finance, travel and billing words are popular, too.

What a great idea to pull this together. Anyone who has gotten ? and actually looked at ? enough spam can figure out a bit of a pattern to phishing attacks. For instance, I?ll get an unusually high number of emails alerting me to problems in a package delivery in one month and the next month, I?ll get a ton of emails telling me that friends and family are sending me e-cards. (Right now, I?m getting a slew of LinkedIn alerts, all of which have some kind of code words or phrases.)

Having a solid working list of code words helps security folks set up filters to send these phishing messages directly to spam. The words in the report can also be easily shared with employees who now have something to check against if they are unsure of the validity of an email.

I?m kind of surprised that I haven?t seen anything like this sooner. It is so simplistic an idea, yet so valuable in providing an extra layer of protection to the network.

Elizabeth Warren 2002 ? Working on at least 10 private legal matters

Represents her office is in Cambridge, MA

Defenders of Elizabeth Warren?s failure to obtain a Massachusetts law license have argued that Warren did not operate an office for the practice of law or maintain a systematic and continuous presence in Massachusetts for the practice of law because all she allegedly did was help write a few Briefs in the Supreme Court and out-of-state federal courts.

Michael Fredrickson, General Counsel of the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers even took the unusual move of giving media interviews defending Warren before any investigation, suggesting that a law professor who merely ?dabbles? in legal consulting doesn?t need to be licensed.? Fredrickson later clarified that he merely was expressing a personal opinion, and that he really didn?t know much about Warren?s practice.

The Warren campaign refuses to detail the full scope of Warren?s private legal activities from her Cambridge office, but details are being uncovered day by day.? Much as with Warren?s history of ?checking the box,? Warren?s campaign makes categorical statements, refuses to release records, and waits to see if others will be able to find details and documents.

The evidence mounts day by day that Warren did a lot more than ?dabble? in the practice of law from her Massachusetts office.?? Among other things, Warren represented to the Texas Bar that Cambridge was her ?primary practice location,??in 2002 billed over $14,000 for ?professional legal services? in?the GAF bankruptcy case, ?and even entered a court appearance for a Massachusetts client in 2001 on Massachusetts legal issues in a federal court in Massachusetts.

More details are coming out about the extensive nature of Warren?s private practice.

In a March 20, 2002,?Verified Statement?(embedded at bottom of post), Warren submitted in the Kaiser Aluminum bankruptcy, Warren detailed for the Court the extensive nature of her law practice at that time, which included at least 9 bankruptcy matters plus other legal work.

Interestingly, Warren disclosed?that she had advised Dow Chemical Company,?in keeping with?a long history of representing large corporate entities:

10. ?. In addition to these academic and legislative activities, have consulted with a?number of companies on mass tort issues. I served in an advisory capacity to Dow Chemical, the?parent company of Dow Coming, in the early days of the Dow Coming bankruptcy I have?assisted the Johns Manville ?rust and the National Gypsum Trust in appellate litigation. I have?been an expert witness on behalf of the National Gypsum Trust and the Fuller Austin trust.? These trusts were formed as part of the confirmation of a plan of reorganization in mass tort?asbestos bankruptcies. I have assisted in the preparation for petitions for certiorari to the United?States Supreme Court in two cases involving future claims, one in an environmental context and?one in an employee liability context. I have argued a case on behalf of Fairchild Aviation, an?airplane manufacturer facing future claims liability. I have filed an amicus brief in future claims?litigation involving Piper Aircraft. [Note - it appears there was a paragraph numbering problem in the original, and that the above paragraph was supposed to be numbered "11"]

12. In addition, I am working with Caplin & Drysdale as a consultant in Chapter 11?proceedings involving the Babcock & Wilcox Company, Pittsburgh Coming Corporation, Owens?Coming Corporation, Armstrong World Industries, Inc., W.R. Grace & Company, G-1 Holdings, Inc., United States Gypsum Corporation, Federal-Mogul Global, Inc. and North American?Refractories Company.

In addition to the nine bankruptcy cases, we also know that Warren was working on the ?FCC v. Nextwave Communications case detailed in my original post.? Even if none of the additional matters listed in paragraph 10 of Warren?s Verified Statement were active in 2002, that would mean Warren was involved in handling a minimum of 10 active private legal matters during 2002.

That hardly is ?dabbling? in the practice of law.? Of course, there may be more, but the Warren campaign will not disclose anything other than the few Supreme Court briefs she worked on.

It is significant that Warren informed the Court in the opening paragraph that she was admitted in Texas, but did not inform the Court that she had been on inactive status since 1992.? Additionally, Warren designated her Cambridge location as her office in connection with this retention:

There are other interesting details in the Verified Statement which will be explored in future posts, such as the Harvard disclosure and reporting requirements, the guidelines limiting faculty to spending 20% of their time on non-law school related matters, and this admonition from the Harvard Law School Faculty Manual in effect in 2001-2002 against the unauthorized practice of law:

The investigation will continue.

Questions About Today's Real Estate? - Crescenta Valley Weekly ...

Advice for first time
home buyers
Dear Phyllis,
I have been back and forth about buying a home for the last three years. I hear that prices have dropped, but I don?t see much evidence of that. Each time I make an offer on a home, someone else?s offer is better, it?s either cash or they offered more money than me. I am becoming discouraged and hope you have some advice for me.
Avo

Dear Avo,
The current market is extremely confusing. Most listings are selling quickly, in multiple offer situations and many for over asking price.? Certain price ranges are much more competitive than others.? The first time buyer market is especially difficult to penetrate.

The first thing I would suggest is to be patient. I know that is easier said than done, but it?s the best advice I can offer any first time home buyer.

The second suggestion is to work with an experienced real estate agent. Not one who has been selling real estate for 30 years and is semi-retired or one who is newly licensed.

The third suggestion is to work with a local real estate agent with an excellent reputation. As a buyer in today?s competitive market, your choice of Realtor? is crucial. There are certain real estate agents known for creating unnecessary conflict. In a multiple offer situation, your choice of real estate agent can kill your offer. All things being equal, the seller?s agent is not going to want to work with them/you and will guide their client (home seller) to a Realtor? who has a track record of closing escrows.

There are a couple of things you and your real estate agent should consider:

1)?? ?With your lender?s
prequalification (which should be current/within 30 days and mention your stellar FICO scores) you should also include evidence of your down payment and reserves (cross out your account number/address/etc. to prevent identity theft).

2)?? ?Have your real estate agent discuss with the seller?s agent specifics: preferred close of escrow date, preferred services (escrow and title companies, etc). What is the seller?s motivation? Is a quick escrow a benefit or hindrance? Tailor your offer to meet a seller?s preferences; it?s not just about the purchase price.

3)?? ?When you see a home you like, act quickly ? try your best to avoid a multiple offer situation. After writing your offer, be prepared for a counter offer and again, don?t drag your feet, know ahead of time how much you are willing to increase your offered price.

In more affordable price ranges, it is not uncommon for buyers to write more than half a dozen purchase offers. Best of luck to you, good things come to those who wait!

93% Farewell, My Queen

If you are expecting a French film chronicling the last days of Marie Antoinette, then you may be in for a slight disappointment. Brilliantly directed by the Benoit Jacquot (who also co-wrote the much less impressive script) and starring Diane Kruger as Marie Antoinette and Lea Seydoux, who plays one of the Queen's readers named Sidonie Laborde, and is also the protagonist of this film (for some reason) "Farewell, My Queen" is advertised as the story of the last days of Marie Antoinette, but it's more like the somewhat muted story of the two months before the "last days" of Marie Antoinette. So, even though "Farewell, My Queen" is a better movie than Sofia Coppola's ill advised, indie rock inspired, "Marie Antoinette", due to the faux-final-days story structure, in conjunction with the fact that "Farewell, My Queen" uses Marie Antoinette as a side character, telling the story from the point of view of Sidonie Laborde (a nobody) this is a film which may have many audiences scratching their heads as to why the need to show this particular moment in the life of Marie Antoinette. As I alluded to above, "Farewell My Queen" chronicles a miniscule portion in time during the last months of Marie Antoinette's reign. However, audiences are not treated to "the good part", or the part they undoubtedly came to see. What I mean by this is there are almost no visuals of the actual Revolution, plus (and more importantly) we don't actually get to witness the final days of Marie Antoinette's life simply because "Farewell, My Queen" curiously plays out through the eyes of one of her ladies-in-waiting. Instead, audiences are forced to sit through a pseudo-love story that focuses not on the very interesting end of Marie Antoinette's reign, but on the minutiae right before it! This film is the equivalent of sitting through the love story of Jack and Rose, with the movie ending just before the Titanic strikes the iceberg. Yes, I am aware that this is a script which was adapted from a critically acclaimed novel by Chantal Thomas, BUT it still doesn't make the story's focus any less misguided. I mean, there are some scenes which do attempt to create a somewhat intriguing love story, an aspect which must be fully accredited to some fantastic mood setting by Jacquot, but in the same vein, this film never rises above said simplistic love story. Side Note: Another issue many audiences will likely come across is how frivolously "Farewell, My Queen" throws its viewers right into the deep end of this story, with little exposition. In fact, the greatest individual flaw which hinders "Farewell, My Queen" will be seen in the audiences immediate realization that neither Jacquot's visuals or the engaging performances (which I will speak about later) are going to give those not formally versed in the players of the French Revolution and the fall of Versailles, the background information they may desperately desire, as this film half-introduces more and more characters of seeming importance. So, do yourself a favor, if you are going to see "Farewell, My Queen" (at the very least) peruse the Marie Antoinette Wiki page before going to see this film. With that said, the visuals (the set design in conjunction with the director) are somewhat breathtaking at times, due to Jacquot making some very brave directorial choices, including tons of long takes which trail behind characters as they weave in and out of crowds, giving audiences an intimate feeling of the atmosphere of late 1700's France, and a few beautifully constructed shots of the landscapes. And I guess it doesn't hurt that the two female leads, Seydoux and Kruger, both give engaging performances. But even if Kruger's interpretation of Antoinette is one of the best I've ever seen and Seydoux is so captivating to watch as she effortlessly takes control of the movie every time she is on screen, there is simply not enough in the story or the writing to give reasoning to the eccentric behavior or motives behind the actions of Marie Antoinette or (more importantly) give a reason as to why Sidonie is so infatuated with her. So, even though, in the latter half of the film (more than an hour in) Jacquot does create an atmosphere which allows these characters to somewhat blossom, many will find it hard to care about a Marie Antoinette story that contains no beheadings. Final Thought: Based on a "last days" plot which attempts to imitate a much better film like "Downfall", even with some spectacular direction and two engaging female performances, "Farewell, My Queen" is nothing more than this year's "My Week With Marilyn", telling a story which focuses on characters nobody really cares about, rather than simply creating a storyline around the life/last days of (in this case) Marie Antoinette. So, even if you are a Marie Antoinette fan, with the overall structure the way it is, "Farewell, My Queen" is nothing more than DVD worthy at best. China official says spat with Japan derails free trade talks

BEIJING (Reuters) - A festering territorial dispute between China and Japan has derailed talks for a free trade zone involving the two countries and South Korea, an adviser to China's central bank said on Thursday.

Sino-Japanese ties are at their lowest in decades amid a row over a series of islands in the East China Sea, waters believed to be rich in natural gas deposits, with neither side backing down on its claim of sovereignty.

Violent protests broke out across China last week after the Japanese government bought two of the islands, known as the Diaoyu in Chinese and the Senkaku in Japan. Tokyo also has a dispute over other islands with South Korea.

"We hope the suspension is temporary," Chen Yulu, a professor at China's Renmin University and an adviser to the monetary policy committee of the People's Bank of China, said of the free trade zone talks. "It will be a big loss for Asia if the process is terminated."

Chen was speaking on the sidelines of a central banking conference involving representatives of all three nations.

Despite the tension, Japanese and Chinese officials met on Thursday to mark 40 years of diplomatic relations, but the head of the Japanese side said he came "with a heavy heart".

What was meant to be a high-level celebration of normalized relations was instead a stiff acknowledgement that the world's second- and third-largest economies remain neighbors with a long history of cooperation.

"Today I have come to Beijing with a number of people who have worked hard over a long time on relations with China," former Japanese Foreign Minister Yohei Kono told Jia Qinglin, a senior Chinese leader, in Beijing's Great Hall of the People.

"The conditions are rather different from when I met Your Excellency in the spring, and I come this time with a heavy heart."

Jia, the Communist Party's fourth-ranked official, called the Japanese visitors "old friends of the Chinese people".

Butt-Injection Death Highlights Underground Plastic Surgery

surgeryIllegal plastic surgery made headlines again this week when Morris ?Tracey Lynn? Garner was charged with depraved-heart murder in Mississippi after he allegedly injected a woman?s buttocks with so much of a silicone-like substance that she later died of complications, including blood clots in her lungs.

The alleged incident horrifies plastic surgeons, but doesn?t surprise them because, they say, underground and barely legal procedures are on the rise.

?You don?t even have words to speak about what a horrible thing it is when somebody who is trying to improve their appearance and self-confidence only ends up, not only potentially unhappy, but dead,? said Dr. Malcolm Roth, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in Arlington Heights, Ill. ?We?re hearing more and more about deaths when non-physicians are doing injections, and patients just aren?t informed.?

Relative cost-effectiveness of SBRT and IMRT in treatment of localized

A new paper in the Journal of Oncology Practice has attempted to compare the cost-effectiveness of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) to that of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) in the treatment of men with low- to intermediate-risk prostate cancer.

Hodges et al. applied a Markov decision analysis model to the potential clinical states of a 70-year-old patient with organ-confined prostate cancer to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the two differing type of external beam radiation treatment, with the following resulsts:

  • For IMRT
    • Average (mean) cost of treatment was?$35,431.
    • Average (mean) number of quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) was 7.9 years.
  • For SBRT
    • Average (mean) cost of treatment was $22,152.
    • Average (mean) number of QALYs was 7.9 years.
  • Sensitivity analysis suggested that SBRT would no longer dominate IMRT in cost-effectiveness if
    • Men treated with SBRT experienced a decrease in quality of life of 4 percent compared to those treated with IMRT.
    • Men treated with SBRT experienced a decrease in therapeutic efficacy of 6 percent compared to those treated with IMRT.

Hodges et al. conclude that SBRT has considerable potential for cost saving compared to IMRT in the treatment of men with low- to intermediate-risk prostate cancer (at least within the US health care system) and may therefore improve access to radiation, increase patient convenience, and boost quality of life for patients. However, they also note carefully that (based on their model) the incremental cost-effectiveness IMRT compared with SBRT is very sensitive to quality-of-life outcomes. This implies that quality of life outcomes do need to be carefully assessed and compared to those for men treated by IMRT in studies of SBRT in the treatment of men with low- and intermediate risk prostate cancer.

The Servants

Something was Coming Undone

[Three Slots Open]When a charmed house traps eight strangers together on its property, the only way they can ever hope to return to normality is to come to terms with the one thing they all have in common?the problems they?ve kept locked away.

This is the thread where you introduce the ghostly ?servant? whom will come to serve your character throughout the roleplay, their profiles do not have to be so detailed as your primary characters, but I?d like them to have some felt depth to them. ^-^;; I?ll provide a basic skeleton to use in order to come up with your servants, but feel free to add to it if you want to, so long as you give the information in the default fields~

As for the history of our ?ghosts? here, well, they don?t have to have personal ones at the moment. The ghosts are souls who are bound to the house by choice, they came to be servants here of their own volition some ages ago. . . . Their role is to look after a single person, to offer to them comfort and advice, and to aid them in overcoming the problems which haunt them. As they take on the appearance of a face that holds some significance to the characters, their presence is a felt one. Their lives from before being bound to the house can be left ambiguous, unless you have some plans regarding that. The people they were before becoming bound to the house is entirely up to you?they can even be another gender than what they appear to be to the characters in reality.

They?re charmed to take on the appearance of a particular person, no matter the gender.

Servant To: Amaryllis Honey
Name of the Person They Look As: Sterling Honey

Nickname(s)/Alias(es): Celesti
Appeared Gender: Male
Appeared Age: Nineteen

Height: 6 ft 1 ins (185 cm)
Weight: 167 lbs (76 kg)

Personality: Celestine is a bit of an odd fellow?the life he led before becoming bound to the house is something he doesn?t much speak of, but his personality has not seemed to have changed much. He?s a rather joking sort, enjoying to poke fun at others until he gets a rise out of them. Even then, he?ll just laugh the outburst off. As far as he is concerned, he?s got nothing to really be afraid of, if someone tried to hit him, he could just phase through it. . . . So, really, he?s a jokester, someone who provokes others, seeming to not care really about what?s going on within a person?s head or heart, as he can really come off as an insensitive jerk. In truth though, Celestine is . . . deeper than that. It is very true that he can really seem unlikeable and rude with how he can come to taunt and tease others, but those are simply ploys he?s developed.

As far as he?s seen, sometimes the best way for someone to confront something that?s been festering within them is for that to be constantly poked and prodded at until, finally, it becomes notable.

So, his rather jerkish mannerisms are actually more of a fa?ade than they are real. Celestine is actually a rather competent soul, mature and levelheaded. He knows what he?s doing, and he understands more about people than he?ll let on. After all, he?s been bound to the house for so long now that he ought to know how to read people considering that the house has taken into itself more than a few people who were in dire need of help. . . .

The Reason They Look As They Do: Celestine has been bound to Amaryllis by a predetermined force?the house has deemed it so. Though the manor doesn?t speak, it sort of can convey what it wants and such to the souls bound to it. . . . And, from this, Celestine has come to be bound to Amaryllis, and as such, he has taken on the appearance of her deceased brother, ?Sterling.?

He has taken on this appearance because of the impact he had on Amaryllis? life. He was the primary source of love and all positive sentiments in her life until his death, and she associates her brother with solace, protection, and love. Given the fact that she?s held onto his memory for so long by dressing and melding his memory with her personality, he still has a very strong connection to her now. Celestine appears as him due to this.
