A U.S. Air Force carry team transfers the remains of Air Force Capt. Nicholas S. Whitlock at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Tuesday.

By Winston Skinner

The Newnan Times-Herald

Flags will fly at half-staff in Georgia on the day of the funeral for Nicholas Schade Whitlock, who grew up in Newnan and died Saturday in Africa.

The bodies of Whitlock and three other men who perished in an airplane accident in the East African nation of Djibouti arrived at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware early Tuesday. Whitlock's parents, Jimmy and Clare Whitlock of Newnan, were in Dover along with the airman's wife, Ashley, and her parents.

Gov. Nathan Deal is planning to order flags at state facilities be lowered to honor Whitlock on the day of his funeral, which still has not been set. Stephanie Mayfield, the governor's press secretary, said Deal is planning to have "flags at half staff on the day of the funeral."

Whitlock, 29, was stationed at Hurlburt Field near Fort Walton Beach, Fla. and had left for Africa about a week before his death. His wife was notified of his death at their home in Destin on Saturday.

In addition to Whitlock, those who lost their lives were Capt. Ryan P. Hall, 1st Lt. Justin J. Wilkens and Senior Airman Julian S. Scholten. The four were aboard a U-28 aircraft.

Military dignified transfer ceremonies for the remains of the four were held at Dover on Tuesday.

Whitlock, who was promoted to captain in November 2010, was a U-28A pilot and was on his fifth deployment. He entered the Air Force in 2006, receiving his commission through the Officer Training School. He had been assigned to the 319th SOS and then to the 34th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt Field since 2008 and had more than 800 combat flight hours.

The cause of the crash remains unknown.

Nick Whitlock was a 2001 honor graduate of Newnan High School. He played football and baseball at Newnan, was an Eagle Scout and earned his private pilot's license while flying at Falcon Field in Peachtree City and at Newnan-Coweta Airport.

Whitlock attended Mercer University where he earned a bachelor of business administration degree. Nick Whitlock also held a master's of business administration from the University of Florida.

As of Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at least 1,771 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to an Associated Press count.

The AP count is six less than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Friday at 10 a.m. EST.

At least 1,479 military service members have died in Afghanistan as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.

Whitlock and the other three Hurlburt airmen are among 104 members of the U.S. military who died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom outside of Afghanistan. The AP count of total OEF casualties outside of Afghanistan is six more than the department's tally.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 15,343 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department.

FALLEN PILOT WHITLOCK REMEMBERED

?We never expect it to be one of ours.?

Dianne Webb reflected on the shock of learning of the death of Capt. Nicholas Schade Whitlock, the 29-year-old airman from Newnan who died in a plane crash in Africa on Saturday. She remarked on the regularity of news reports about young men dying in war zones, but the loss of one of her son?s childhood playmates made the headlines and news reports suddenly, dramatically personal and real.

?I never expected it to be one of Jonathan?s friends,? she said.

Whitlock?s family learned of his death late Saturday. Associated Press reported Tuesday that Whitlock and three other airmen were aboard a reconnaissance plane that crashed six miles from Camp Lemonnier, the United States? only base in Africa.

According to AP, the four men were returning from Afghanistan, quoting military sources.

The news of Nick Whitlock?s death was being shared by Newnan friends on Facebook Sunday. The family was on the prayer list at numerous churches in Newnan and in other nearby areas including at the Methodist church at Haralson in Coweta?s southeastern corner.

The Whitlock family?s influence and friendships spread far and deep in Coweta County, and many who heard the news knew the fallen airman or at least one member of his family.

Alan Wood, who was principal at Newnan High School when Whitlock graduated in 2001, remembered a remarkable young man. ?He was a goal setter,? Wood recalled. ?With his imagination, he could touch the sky.?

Most of Webb?s memories of Nick Whitlock are from when he was a young child. Webb lost her son, Jonathan, to an accident in February 1992. Jonathan and James Whitlock, Nick?s older brother, were close in age and were friends.

Nick Whitlock often was part of their adventures. ?I remember him tagging along with them and being a sweet little boy,? Webb said.

She remembered that Jonathan Webb and Nick Whitlock carved their names into a cork bulletin board with a handbell tool when they were supposed to be practicing a handbell piece at First Baptist Church. The boys sometimes spent the night at each other?s homes and enjoyed a trip to Stone Mountain in the summer of 1991 to see the laser show.

The kudzu patch behind the Webbs? home was a favorite spot. ?The boys had the best time,? she remembered.

?I never, ever had to worry when Jonathan was with the Whitlock boys. I knew Clare and Jimmy, and I knew James and Nick. They were good boys from a good family,? Webb said.

Nick Whitlock was active in sports at Newnan High School ? playing baseball and football. He also excelled academically ? graduating with honor in 2001.

?He was an extremely intelligent, personable individual who had effervescent creativity,? Wood said.

The longtime Coweta County school administrator also remembered Whitlock?s determination to become a pilot ? something he began by flying from local airports in Newnan and Peachtree City. ?He was one who fulfilled dreams,? Wood said.

Whitlock spent his formative years surrounded by family. His middle name ? Schade ? is the maiden name of his mother, Clare. His grandfather, Wendell Whitlock, is a World War II veteran who was the county public works superintendent for years, and Nick Whitlock has aunts, uncles and a large number of cousins in Coweta County.

Nick Whitlock worked with his brother, James, in the Alaska?s Healing Hearts, which offers a year-round nationwide outdoor program that focuses on taking disabled military on hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities.

In recent months, the brothers took three disabled soldiers from Fort Benning on a two-day trophy deer hunt at Antler Creek plantation in Alaska. In an interview soon after that trip, James Whitlock described Alaska?s Healing Hearts as ?a different kind of rehabilitation.? He said, ?This is our passion. We love to hunt and fish, and we love the veterans.?

Funeral plans for Nick Whitlock have not yet been finalized. A memorial service for him and the three other men who died ? Capt. Ryan P. Hall, 1st Lt. Justin J. Wilkens and Senior Airman Julian S. Scholten ? is also being planned at Hurlburt Field in Florida, where all four were stationed.

Officials told AP that it did not appear hostile fire had brought down the plane, a single-engine, fixed-wing U-28A. Camp Lemonnier is near Djibouti?s border with Somalia.

Amazingly, life thrives at Earth's deepest spot

Life finds a way, even in the total darkness near the deepest known part of the ocean, according to new research.

Scientists have discovered fields of bone-white clams clustering near hydrothermal vents in the western Pacific Ocean that lie as deep as 19,230 feet (5,860 meters) below the surface, near the Mariana Trench, the deepest point on Earth's surface.

The discovery, made during a September 2010 expedition, was utterly unexpected, according to a study on the find published in a recent issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Deepest of the deep
Scientists aboard a manned submersible were conducting research dives to study the geology of a region of the Mariana Trench, the deepest trench on Earth, which lies several hundred miles south of the island of Guam.

The researchers happened upon the hydrothermal vents just 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of the Challenger Deep? the deepest spot on the planet, where the sea floor plunges to 35,700 feet (10,880 meters). ?

In addition to clams, the team saw or collected various deep-dwelling sea anemones, snails, at least one type of comb jelly known for producing shimmering bioluminescence, and at least one crab that has long, reaching front pincers.

The team retrieved 30 clams from the site, along with 170 pounds (77 kilograms) of rocks.

The vents may be the deepest ever discovered. The team named them the Shinkai

Seep Field, for the vehicle that allowed the find, the Shinkai 6500, a Japanese manned submersible with one of the deepest ranges of any vehicle on the planet.

Different kind of vent
However, unlike the deepest known active volcanic vents on Earth ? the Piccard/Beebe vents, which lie 16,400 feet (5,000 meters) below the Caribbean ? the newfound Pacific vents are not superheated by volcanic forces, but are a cooler type of hydrothermal vent. They spew heated, chemically-rich water, but is not fueled by volcanic activity; instead, it is driven by the collision of two oceanic plates.

"These kinds of low-temperature fluid vents are very difficult to find and may be very widespread on the ocean floor," said Robert Stern, a professor of geosciences at University of Texas, Dallas, and one of the paper's authors, in a statement.

"And they can sustain high-biomass communities," he added. "This has implications for the chemical composition of the oceans and the distribution of deep-sea life."

The discovery comes on the heels of a string of revelations about life at hydrothermal vents around the globe. Scientists have uncovered yeti crabs living on vents near Antarctica, and expeditions to the Piccard/Beebe sites in the Caribbean uncovered eyeless shrimp.

The Shinkai vents were discovered by a joint team of geoscientists from the United States and Japan. Stern said he and his colleagues are proposing to return to the region within the next year or two.

Blueshelled ? Book Review and Giveaway: Letters in Cardboard ...

There are very few fiction books that focus on a female protagonist that choose to focus on the female relationships in her life without going all ?beaches? on us, focusing on how she needs to ?get the man? (either back or stealing him from a friend), or focusing on how she has totally fallen down on her knees and will never recover until some extreme twist of fate changes her life and suddenly she?s saved! SAVED!

Let me save you time. That doesn?t happen here.

Some events in life are quiet, painful, thoughtful, and, by turns, beautiful. Parker is a 29-year-old who is a part of the boomerang generation. She works in a job she doesn?t despise, and yet she finds herself lacking partnership in her friendships and her romantic relationships. Her ties are weak, at best, with everyone in her life including her parents. The exception to this is the amazing bond she shares with the grandmother who raised her. When Dotty, her grandmother begins to exhibit signs of memory loss as well as the inability to care for herself, Parker?s carefully constructed life does begin to crumble and the question is begged: to whom does an adult child turn when there are no parents who are emotionally able to catch her fall and there is no support system other than the person who is ailing?

In Parker?s case, instead of leaning on the weak supports she has, she turns inward in a way that I have rarely seen in a novel. We tend to despair from the notion of an extrovert who has the ability to reach others or at least who has others that care about reaching her ignoring that help. In this case, Parker is left to go on her own until events with Dotty reach a bitter climax. Letters in Cardboard Boxes explores intergenerational friendships and how the most unlikely places provide us support in times of need. We never truly reach Parker and, frankly, that?s just how she?d prefer it. In the process, though, we get a story that winds us through some realistic life events that someone will need to hear and process.

If you are looking for a serious read that allows you to just feel the differences in relationships between women, this is the novel for you.

Note: I received this novel for free in exchange for my open and honest review of it.

An interview with the author:

I have just a few questions for you.

1. So many books with a female protagonist tend to lean towards a relationship focus due to the surge of ?chick lit.? What made you decide to focus on the inter-generational relationships between Parker and her grandmother and Parker and Tanya?

Abby Slovin: I think the importance of these relationships is often undervalued in our society, particularly because we seem so averse to aging and its effects. But, I wanted to stress the value of these kinds of relationships to foster a better understanding of the world and ourselves. Also, it tends to put our own lives and problems into perspective when we have access to a much longer timeline.

I also created these relationships to toy with the concept of age. I?ve characterized these particular characters to not act ?their age?; Dotty is whimsical and eager; Tanya is wise and mature; Parker is somewhere in the middle. I like to toy with the reader?s expectations of what a ?grandmother? should act like, a ?teenager?, a ?twenty-something,? etc.

2. Do you have personal reasons for choosing the disease of Alzheimers and was it difficult for you to write about a subject that affects so many as the Baby Boomer generation begins to hit this stage?

Abby Slovin: Mainly, it felt like a story that needed to be told. My reasons were not necessarily personal, but I felt strongly about developing a story around loss. My decision to further develop this loss into Alzheimer?s had a lot to do with the nature of the disease. I wanted Parker to struggle with identity and her sense of security as she loses her grandmother and, to me, the idea that her grandmother also loses her memory and a sense of self provides a metaphor for what we all go through as the generations before us are lost. We lose that sense of a longer timeline, we lose a lot of our own history when this happens.

3. Frequently in the novel, Parker treats Jimmy the way men are frequently portrayed as treating women in novels: as someone to be used when needed and then discarded. What motivated you to give Parker the power and what were Parker?s reasons for detaching from Jimmy?

Abby Slovin: I think in a way, they both use each other. Jimmy?s behavior is consistent throughout the story, though. His relationship with Parker is always about convenience. For Parker, I think we see a very different person in the beginning of the novel. Someone who is conflicted by Jimmy?s treatment of her, his sort of indifference to their relationship. She definitely grapples with it more in her own head, and with her friend Jill, in the beginning. But, as her grandmother?s deterioration worsens, she reaches for anyone to fill that void, and ignores the red flags she saw before simply to have that feeling of loneliness subside. Its only once she finds the love letters from 1941 that she realizes she needs something more from a relationship. These letters, and her relationship with Jerry, remind her that she deserves something more.

4. Parker has a reluctant relationship with her parents that is never fully developed in the novel. Was there background to the story that we did not see or that went unexplained?

Abby Slovin: I think there are a lot of unspoken moments in this relationship between Parker and her parents, simply because their absence produced a lot of empty space and silence. Towards the end of the novel, Parker?s mother provided a little insight on their behavior, saying that she thought if they devoted their lives to something they truly loved, they would somehow make a difference in the world. I think this is a motivation people can relate to, and despite it not totally explaining the behavior, provides some good insight on her parents. I?m sure that their behavior seemed inexplicable to a lot of readers and am always very interested to hear how people respond to them. But this is how some people really live their lives.

5. Parker struggles with embracing her adult self and dealing with the decisions she must make that overwhelm her. This is noted as she frequently escapes into her home and into herself when things get tough. Did you draw on any cultural references to give Parker this coping mechanism or was this part of her character as an integral part of the character?s nature? Why?

Abby Slovin: That?s a very interesting question. I think the decision to retreat ? both into herself and her home ? has a lot to do with the way Parker has coped with problems before. And without her grandmother ? her anchor and confidante, I think this reaction becomes even more pronounced. I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on whether there is a stronger cultural reference here. I think there could very well be.

Jillian: Well, Parker is on the cusp of Generation ME and part of that generation is the strong desire to be a boomerang kid and go back to the safety and cocoon of your parents home until the world feels safe enough that you can take it on your own when you are an adult. This age of safety keeps falling further and further back. Parker?s been on her own for a while, but never really comfortable, and she?s never had what most people would call a normal social relationship with her peer groups. Her grandmother is her one true friend and I suppose the cultural context I was looking at was ?to whom do you boomerang when things get tough when your parents are emotionally and physically unavailable and you are required to step up and be an adult.? Parker initially falls apart at this concept, as most people of her generation would. She retreats into herself, breaks off contact with her one friend, turns her paramour away, stops seeing Tanya and avoids the world as much as she can. All signs of this point to depression or other mood issues, but the one luxury Parker has never had was allowing her parents to make everything all right. Her grandmother always did that. For me, I always look to a social context and I thought that perhaps you were making a point about how, generationally, there are some anomalies that are not always easily solvable.

Abby Slovin:That?s an excellent point! I think the boomerang concept is exceptionally appropriate in this context, particularly because it seems so likely that Parker?s response would be complete immobilization (and retreat) when the person ?to which we boomerang? is no longer there.

Very interesting analysis, Jillian?

Jillian: I didn?t mean to super analyze your stuff, it?s something I do innately. Sorry about that.

Abby Slovin: No need to apologize at all! What you?ve brought up is fascinating.

I wonder?how do you find the overall process of grief portrayed in the novel? Does it seem to adequately describe some of the stages people typically go through? And how did you react to the character Tanya?

Just curious? :) I would very much respect your opinion. In many ways, the story is meant to be felt in a literary sense, but I?m always interested in hearing how it compares to certain ?realities?, so to speak? **NOTE: some of what Ms. Slovin asked about was removed as it was personal discussion between the author and blogger. :)

Jillian: I think Parker hits the first stages of it and she is in the middle of Acceptance when we leave her. The denial stage is very, very strong in her and I think that Kubler-Ross would approve as most people stay in that stage for a long, long time. Parker absolutely refused to see the truth in the diagnosis and even thought she might be able to bring her grandmother back with triggering her. Her failure was heartbreaking and painful for me to read because it?s common. I don?t think she finishes her process with us, which is perfect because it?s not a fast process. Had you tied it up in the neat bow that I normally love I probably would have felt dissatisfied with that.

Tanya?s situation is more complex. She is a mature girl because she is forced to be mature. I wanted more insight into her situation (which I supposed might be a lovely possibility for a spin off), because I never really understood what made her tick. I got that she was compensating for what she needed at home, but her dedication to others was an outlier to the kinds of things you general see. Personally, I thought that was the point. I wanted to see more of her grief in regards to the loss of her homeless friend, who seemed to be her only true friend outside of Parker and Dotty. Her general acceptance and ?It is what it is? attitude was a little unrealistic, but it could also be her own form of denial in that if she ignores all of what is surrounding her, she can survive. An odd defense mechanism, but a true one. Realities are so much stranger than fiction. It is very easy to escape into the real issues people have. It?s one of the reasons I love my job. If you?ve never been to an anon meeting (any of them will do), I highly encourage it. It?s one of the few therapies that are open to the public that allows an insight into the mechanisms people have.

I appreciate your willingness to embrace the strengths and weaknesses in your characters and in your craft to make it more dynamic. So many forget to do so.

Chip MacGregor .com: Does a beginning writer need an agent?

Amy wrote to ask,?"In your opinion, does a beginning writer need an agent?"

It depends on the writer. There are some authors who are well connected in the industry, don't mind dealing with contracts and negotiations, understand career direction, and can survive without an agent. But in my view, it's rare to do those things well while maintaining a writing career. I used to tell people that I'm not an evangelist for agents, and over the past 15 years or so I've tried to maintain a balance -- I haven't always believed that every writer needs an agent in order to succeed.? But I'm now changing my tune. Most publishers require you to have an agent or they won't look at your material.?Things have changed significantly in the past few years,? so that publishers are? moving toward relying on agents to be the first line, reviewing proposals and weeding out the chaff. Working with an agent professionalizes the relationship -- an agent is not as emotionally tied to a work as an author, so he or she can be more dispassionate about discussing a project, and the agent is going to be more familiar with the business of contracts, so ostensibly things will move along better for both sides. I recognize that some have said the future is in self-publishing, so that means authors won't need agents. I think that's completely wrong-headed. If you're going to be responsible for your book, you should think about working with someone who knows what they're doing and can help you. Think of the way realtors have changed the home buying market: You can still sell your home by owner, but it's gotten considerably more complex to do so. You've got to know the market, understand how to show your home, know how to get the word out, feel comfortable negotiating a price, and perhaps most importantly, understand how to fill out the mountain of paperwork that goes along with every home sale. (My wife and I sold three homes on our own, and another five homes through realtors, so I understand the difference a professional can make to a deal.) There are still plenty of small publishing houses that prefer to work directly with the author, but any publisher of size will want to work through an agent.

Donna wants to know,?"How will I know I need an agent?"

If you're a novelist, but you don't have a completed manuscript yet, you probably do not need an agent. (And, to be completely honest about it, you'd have a tough time landing an agent.) If you're a nonfiction writer, having a great idea and great writing in a proposal is essential, and bringing some sort of strong platform to the table will help a lot. The bottom line is this: if you have something that is worth selling, then unless you know how to sell it and who to sell it to, you?re out of your depth and need an agent. If you have a great book idea and a solid proposal, you probably should at least consider interviewing potential literary agents. Again, you can learn to do some of this on your own, if you want to put the time in.?

Jon wrote to ask,?"What should an agent do for me?"

Again, that depends on your needs. My relationship with one of my authors (say... bestselling novelist Lisa Samson) is quite different from my relationship with another one of my authors (let's say a first-time nonfiction writer).?Each author is going to have a unique set of needs.?But, generally speaking, an agent should help you evaluate ideas and discuss publishing trends and the salability of your manuscript. He or she should help you create a dynamite proposal, tweaking it as necessary and working with you to make the writing as strong as possible. (You get one shot with a publishing house... so don't turn something in that's only 80% ready.) A good agent will help you improve your work, understand the industry, suggest editing or writing help if you need it, introduce your work to key acquisition people, and sell your proposal for you. He or she will negotiate a good deal on your behalf, paying special attention to key contract issues, and help you create a partnership with your publisher. The agent should ensure contract compliance, help you maximize your marketing opportunities (something that's becoming more important in the current marketplace), be a pain when you need someone to kick things into gear, read a royalty statement and spot errors, be your biggest fan and encourager, assist you with career planning, champion your projects, and grow with you over time.

So the follow-up question probably needs to be, ?What do YOU need in an agent?? Because your needs may be very different from your friend?s needs. And every agent is different. Some are great editors. Others are great contract people. Some are basically sales people. Others are negotiators. And still others are life coaches. If you figure out what you need most from an agent, you?ll be better equipped to find the agent that?s right for you, Jon.

Tammy states the obvious roadblock:?"I feel stuck -- you can't get an agent unless you're published, but you can't get published without an agent. Help! What's the best way to go about finding an agent?"?

You're right -- it's not fair, and you're screwed. Sorry! The most important step in finding the literary agent that's right for you is to make sure you've got a great idea, expressed through great writing, and you can back it all up with a strong platform. Those are probably the?first?things you need to have completed. Once you're ready to start looking for an agent, you can begin by looking in any of the "find an agent" books that are on the market. Check with Writers Digest books, and look at B&N for a book that lists literary agencies. Next, you can meet agents at writer's conferences, book shows, or at publishing functions like BEA or ICRS. These are still the best places to get 15 minutes of face-time with an agent. It allows you to get a feel for him or her, and see if you think the two of you might work together. At some writers' conferences, you can send in your material ahead of time and sign up for an appointment. If you're going to do that,? remember to create a good presentation -- after all, you are selling?yourself. Put together a cover letter that tells about your life and work. Include your previous writing and book sales. Show the agent a great proposal, and make sure it's as strong as you can make it. Be ready to talk about yourself, your books, your ideas, and your platform. An author who shows huge potential for the future is much more likely to garner interest from a good agent.

I hope you're finding this series helpful. I've got several more questions, then I'm going to move onto contracts.?

Personal Injury Attorney Drexler to Guest on "Legal File" Show

In part one of a two-part interview on Public Access Channel's "Legal File" Los Angeles-based personal injury attorney David Drexler spoke candidly with the show's host, Charles Parselle, Esq., about his family history, upbringing and education.

Sherman Oaks, CA (prHWY.com) February 21, 2012 - Los Angeles, CA - August 18, 2008 - In part one of a two-part interview on Public Access Channel's "Legal File" Los Angeles-based personal injury attorney David Drexler spoke candidly with the show's host, Charles Parselle, Esq., about his family history, upbringing and education that has formed the foundation of his philosophy and attitudes about justice and practicing law personal injury law.

Drexler is the son of immigrant parents; Holocaust survivors who came to the United States after the war in search of a better life. His parents opened one of the first and most famous kosher delis in Los Angeles and ran it for more than forty years in the San Fernando Valley. It was here, Drexler says, working behind the counter of his parent's deli, that he developed an empathetic ear for the problems people were suffering. He also credits his work at the deli for his people skills and his desire to perform, a talent that serves him well in the courtroom as a successful trial attorney.

"I enjoy the performance aspect of trial law," says Drexler, who is also recognized as a premiere legal malpractice attorney. And it certainly shows in his trial resolutions. His cases range from medical and legal malpractice to sexual harassment and premises liability cases.

Drexler graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Suma Cum Laude from UCLA before attending Johns Hopkins University in Washington DC on a Fellowship in International Law and Diplomacy. Following three years there, he returned to Los Angeles where he graduated from Loyola Law School. Parselle asked Drexler how he managed to deal with the ups and downs of personal injury law and the system of working on contingency (or pay only on a successful result).

"To be successful," Drexler says, "to really care about the clients, you can't think about 'Am I going to make money in this case?' but rather 'Am I prepared for this case?'. I'm going to worry about preparation but not about making money. That's the only way I can sleep at night."

Drexler's philosophy about clients is that they are 'clients for life.' He doesn't believe in the kind of law practice that shoves clients through the legal system for a quick result by settling a case that deserves to be heard before a judge. When mediation works, he uses it, but doing what's best for his client, despite the financial output required of an attorney to put on a case, is what he expects from himself.

His clients come back again and again over the years because they trust him. "I'm focused on the client,' he says. "Not on the money." It's exactly that philosophy that has made David Drexler one of the most successful trial attorneys in California.

Small Business Advertising and Marketing ? For Free!! 5 Top Tips ...

A large part of running a successful business is knowing how to market it effectively.? Here?s five essential tips to start you marketing your company for free.

Five essential top tips for marketing your business for free:

  1. Telephone Directories.? Make sure that your business has taken advantage of its? free listing within the relevant classification of the telephone directory (Yellow Pages, Thomson Local and Phone Book).? If you are doubtful of the relevance of this media channel for your business, then just remember that these publishers hold vast databases of businesses throughout the country ? databases which then feed into an online directories, mobile directory apps and 118 services.?? You don?t want your competitors to be visible when you are not.
  2. Local online directories.? There seems to be an ever-expanding list of online directories which provide businesses with free listings.? Content varies according to the individual directory ? more established directories will offer less as part of the basic listing, but will allow businesses to buy adverts that include web links, more content and priority over basic listings in results.? Smaller online directories tend to allow more content including weblinks, photos, keywords and detailed descriptions.? Why should you get listed on these directories? 1) they are free, 2) they rank highly on search engine results? giving you more exposure in local search results and 3) for directories allowing website links ? this will build links back to your site also helping to improve the SEO of your website.
  3. Search engine listings.? Much like the online directories, you need to claim your local listings on search engines.? Once you have ?claimed? your listing, you will be able to enhance it with relevant content such as descriptions, business hours, photos and so on ? which give prospective customers the information they need and also increase the chance of being contacted, over a competing business that hasn?t bothered providing additional information.? It?s important to claim these listings as the search engines give them more prominence in their search results.? And as you will know, it?s crucial that you are found when people are looking for your services.
  4. LinkedIn profile. If you feel like you should belong to a social network but don?t know which one or understand the power of relevance of Twitter and Facebook ? then you should start with LinkedIn as the first step. LinkedIn is the world?s largest professional network, has over 120 million members and is growing rapidly. Small businesses can really benefit from using LinkedIn to connect with trusted contacts as well as exchanging knowledge, ideas, and opportunities with a broader network of professionals.? Simply setting up your personal profile so that you can connect with clients, colleagues and any other contacts is a must, to start.
  5. Testimonials.? If you have any client or customer feedback or have been given testimonials ? use them! What better way to sell your services or products than through your customers? Testimonials and client referrals are incredibly powerful and will give prospects the reassurance they need to use your services or buy your products.? The more feedback you have the better ? if you don?t have any, then simply request some from current or past clients.? You can also use feedback to strengthen your profile on LinkedIn ? where you can request ?recommendations? that will be added to your profile.

These may not be the most exciting tasks that you can implement to promote your business and admittedly some can be fairly time-consuming BUT they are important and will give you results.? And as they are free what have you got to lose?

If you are a business owner/ partner or manager and simply can?t give this the time it needs, we can always help out.? In addition to our team of skilled consultants, media experts and strategy developers, we also have an excellent administrative team in place who would be more than happy to manage all of your listings; making sure they are accurate and in the right places. Air Travel Rules: Flying Utilizing Pets | ArticleGoes - Free Dofollow ...

If you are moving, there?s a good chance that you may must bring your pet together with you. If this
is the case, so as to you are subject to a new set of air travel procedures. Before leaving
for the international airport, with your pet or maybe pets in tow, you will be advised to famialrize by yourself with those protocols.

The first step in vacationing, in the air, with a puppy is to make sure that they can be even allowed. Specified
pets are allowed to often be on airplanes, yet that does not mean that just about all airlines will allow them. If you are
planning on flying with your pet, you will need to tell your airline of this data upfront.
This is necessary because not all airlines will allow you to bring a family pet onboard. Therefore, should you not
check with your airline just before heading to the airport, you could be unable to board the flight.

When traveling which has a pet, you will need to maintain that pet covered. That means that if you are
going with an animal, such as a pet dog or a cat, which animal will likely have to be in a carrier. As soon as
purchasing an animal provider, it is important to know that its not all carriers are allowed onboard. If you
might be keeping your dog in the cabin on you, as opposed to having your four-legged friend treated as
looked at baggage, you will need to be sure that your pet carrier will never negatively affect various other
passengers. Your pet provider must not block church aisle ways or encroach for other passenger?s seating
spots. In addition to these standard rules and limitations, you may find that each air travel has their
private set of pet tote rules.

Almost all air carriers require that your house animals have the proper documents before being allowed for their
airplanes. These documents most commonly include information on your current pet?s health. Most airlines
will need that your pet experiences a medical analysis before being transported simply by airplane. This
data is not only used to be sure that your pet is healthy enough to fly, nonetheless is also used to
guarantee that they are protected with the proper vaccinations. Proper vaccines will not only protect
your dog, but other individuals, as well as airline workers.

Once you have received outdoor patio from the airline, for you to wish to fly upon, purchased the
ideal pet equipment, as well as obtained the proper health and fitness checks for your pet, you will need to wait
right until your day of holiday. On that day, you may want to get through to the airport a little bit prior to when
recommended. This will help to ensure that you could quickly correct a problem, without
requiring you to miss your air travel, should one develop.

When you and your animal arrive at the airport, whether early or not, you may both be required to
move through airport security. Your pet will be required to traverse a metal detector, the same as
everyone else. If you are having a pet carrier, it is additionally likely that your animal carrier will be governed by
examination. This examination most commonly includes being mailed though the x-ray machine along with
your carryon luggage; yet, it is important to note that the animal will not have to go through this
x-ray machine; the metal detector should be more than enough.

As previously mentioned, you cannot assume all airlines allow their very own passengers to fly with their pets, in the
cabin and also below deck. That is the reason it is advised that you simply determine whether or not the animal can fly along with
you, ahead of time. Together with different air travel procedures, you may also find that several airlines
charged more fees for puppy passengers.

Latino group: Investigate gay Ariz. sheriff

By msnbc.com and The Associated Press

PHOENIX - A Latino rights organization has asked for a federal investigation into an Arizona sheriff seeking the Republican nomination for a congressional seat who was forced to confirm he is gay amid allegations of misconduct made by a Mexican immigrant with whom he had a relationship.

The group, Respect Respeto, on Monday sent a request to the U.S. Department of Justice for a probe into Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu for abuse of power.

Babeu confirmed he is gay Saturday and resigned from presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's Arizona committee amid his ex-lover's allegations. He denied claims he tried to threaten the man, a former campaign volunteer, with deportation if their past relationship was made public.

Respect Respeto wants the sheriff investigated on behalf of every immigrant who has been threatened with deportation.

The group alleges in its request to the Justice Department that Babeu made "text messages, pictures and threats that are unbecoming of an elected sheriff."

The letter, signed by the group's director, Lydia Guzman, reads, "The?threat came from the top law enforcement officer in Pinal County, a person who?s sworn to protect and serve victims of crime. These types of threats and acts of intimidation send a horrible message to the migrant community that they cannot look to their law enforcement agencies for protection when they are victims of a crime."

The group could not be reached by msnbc.com on Tuesday.

Ariz. sheriff quits Romney campaign, says: 'I'm gay'

Babeu, who was elected in 2008 as the first Republican sheriff of Pinal County,?has gained national media attention for speaking out against illegal immigration and the unsecured U.S. border with Mexico.

On Monday, Babeu told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that he was the victim, and that his ex-lover, identified publicly only as "Jose," "wanted to harm me."

Jose --?who Politico reported on Tuesday is a 34-year-old Mexican national living in the US legally -- had volunteered as a social media manager for Babeu's campaign websites. Babeu alleged Jose tweeted photos of him and posted "very negative things about me, posing as me."

The photos had been sent to Jose for "personal consumption," he said.

Babeu faces primary elections in Arizona on Aug. 28. He claims Jose's actions were politically motivated.

"There were several crimes committed here against me and my campaign," Babeu said. "All I wanted done is for this to stop."

The two men met on gay.com in 2006.

If you?re carrying around some pounds you want to urge rid of, then you wish to try and do some cardio exercise for weight loss. If that sounds horrifying, do not worry. There are various styles of cardio exercise that you?re certain to enjoy.

You do not have to shop for tights and leg warmers. There is no demand as far as fashion or equipment to start out performing some good weight loss cardio. You do not even would like an exercise DVD. Step out your door and walk briskly for regarding twenty to 30 minutes, or as long as you?re snug at first.
If you need to strive something besides walking, aerobic dancing is a smart choice. You?ll be able to just dance around your living area, but an exercise DVD could be a smart approach to try to to it. You?ll notice DVDs that will let you are doing basic dancing moves. Canonical Announces Ubuntu for Android

android-ubuntu-03Canonical's Ubuntu TV, unveiled earlier this year, was the first in a series of announcements about "Ubuntu on devices". The next device in Canonical's multi-screen strategy for world domination is being unveiled next week at Mobile World Congress 2012, and it's an Android-powered smartphone. It's not entirely what you might think, though. This is not an Ubuntu app running atop Android. Nor is it an all-Ubuntu device running an Android emulator. Rather, Ubuntu for Android is the full Ubuntu desktop running side-by-side with Android on a shared kernel that provides context appropriate access to all your content. When out and about, the phone operates as any other Android-powered phone; but when you slip the device into a dock connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse you get the familiar Ubuntu desktop experience.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 20, 2012) ? Pompeii-like, a 300-million-year-old tropical forest was preserved in ash when a volcano erupted in what is today northern China. A new study by University of Pennsylvania paleobotanist Hermann Pfefferkorn and colleagues presents a reconstruction of this fossilized forest, lending insight into the ecology and climate of its time.

Pfefferkorn, a professor in Penn's Department of Earth and Environmental Science, collaborated on the work with three Chinese colleagues: Jun Wang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yi Zhang of Shenyang Normal University and Zhuo Feng of Yunnan University.

Their paper was published this week in the Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The study site, located near Wuda, China, is unique as it gives a snapshot of a moment in time. Because volcanic ash covered a large expanse of forest in the course of only a few days, the plants were preserved as they fell, in many cases in the exact locations where they grew.

"It's marvelously preserved," Pfefferkorn said. "We can stand there and find a branch with the leaves attached, and then we find the next branch and the next branch and the next branch. And then we find the stump from the same tree. That's really exciting."

The researchers also found some smaller trees with leaves, branches, trunk and cones intact, preserved in their entirety.

Due to nearby coal-mining activities unearthing large tracts of rock, the size of the researchers' study plots is also unusual. They were able to examine a total of 1,000 m2 of the ash layer in three different sites located near one another, an area considered large enough to meaningfully characterize the local paleoecology.

The fact that the coal beds exist is a legacy of the ancient forests, which were peat-depositing tropical forests. The peat beds, pressurized over time, transformed into the coal deposits.

The scientists were able to date the ash layer to approximately 298 million years ago. That falls at the beginning of a geologic period called the Permian, during which Earth's continental plates were still moving toward each other to form the supercontinent Pangea. North America and Europe were fused together, and China existed as two smaller continents. All overlapped the equator and thus had tropical climates.

At that time, Earth's climate was comparable to what it is today, making it of interest to researchers like Pfefferkorn who look at ancient climate patterns to help understand contemporary climate variations.

In each of the three study sites, Pfefferkorn and collaborators counted and mapped the fossilized plants they encountered. In all, they identified six groups of trees. Tree ferns formed a lower canopy while much taller trees -- Sigillaria and Cordaites -- soared to 80 feet above the ground. The researchers also found nearly complete specimens of a group of trees called Noeggerathiales. These extinct spore-bearing trees, relatives of ferns, had been identified from sites in North America and Europe but appeared to be much more common in these Asian sites.

They also observed that the three sites were somewhat different from one another in plant composition. In one site, for example, Noeggerathiales were fairly uncommon, while they made up the dominant plant type in another site. The researchers worked with painter Ren Yugao to depict accurate reconstructions of all three sites.

"This is now the baseline," Pfefferkorn said. "Any other finds, which are normally much less complete, have to be evaluated based on what we determined here."

The findings are indeed "firsts" on many counts.

"This is the first such forest reconstruction in Asia for any time interval, it's the first of a peat forest for this time interval and it's the first with Noeggerathiales as a dominant group," Pfefferkorn said.

Because the site captures just one moment in Earth's history, Pfefferkorn noted that it alone cannot explain how climate changes affected life on Earth. But it helps provide valuable context.

"It's like Pompeii: Pompeii gives us deep insight into Roman culture, but it doesn't say anything about Roman history in and of itself," Pfefferkorn said. "But on the other hand, it elucidates the time before and the time after. This finding is similar. It's a time capsule and therefore it allows us now to interpret what happened before or after much better."

The study was supported by the Chinese Academy of Science, the National Basic Research Program of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the University of Pennsylvania.
