Okla. Dentist Could Face Criminal Charges

An Oklahoma dentist accused of exposing thousands of patients to HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C may face criminal charges for his actions, Susan Rogers, president of Oklahoma Board of Dentistry, told ABCNews.com.

"The basic things that everyone knows -- follow CDC guidelines, use clean syringes, don't reuse multi-dose vials in multiple patients, don't use rusted equipment -- those are things even non-physicians know," Rogers said. "Those are basic things. That part makes it egregious."

On Friday the Tulsa Health Department sent 7,000 warning letters to the patients of Dr. Wayne Scott Harrington, an oral surgeon with practices in Tulsa and Owasso, informing them of an investigation into Harrington's practice and advising them to get tested for HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C.

Rogers said investigations by the state dental board, the state health department, the state bureau of narcotics and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency are just getting underway. Although she has not yet submitted documents to the Tulsa District Attorney, she has alerted him about the situation.

The dentist's alleged practices came to light after a patient tested positive for HIV and hepatitis C, and had no known risk factors. State health officials traced the infections to the dentist.

Upon hearing of the infected patient on March 15, the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry conducted a surprise inspection of Harrington's practice on March 18, allegedly finding numerous problems, including regular use of a rusty set of instruments on patients with known infections, and the practice of pouring bleach on wounds until they "turned white." They also discovered that Harrington employed dental assistants who weren't licensed.

"Practicing dentistry without a license is a felony," she said. "When we found out the things that they said, the fact that the assistants were giving IV anesthesia, that part is absolutely unacceptable and illegal, and my board frowns on that."

Since news of the investigation broke yesterday, Rogers said she has received several other calls from former patients alleging that the dental assistants performed other dental procedures, as well.

Calls last night to Harrington's office were directed to an operator, who told ABC News the clinic no longer took voicemails. The operator said patients were being referred to another clinic, but did not disclose the clinic's name.

Harrington voluntarily surrendered his state dental license and other permits, and a formal hearing before the dentistry board is scheduled for April 19.

Rogers called the incident a "perfect storm." On top of his many violations in sanitary practice, the dentist was a Medicaid provider, which means he had a high proportion of patients with HIV or hepatitis, she said.

Harrington and his staff told investigators that he treated a "high population of known infectious disease carrier patients," according to a 17-count complaint filed by the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry. Drug cabinets were unlocked and unsupervised during the day, and Harrington did not keep an inventory log of drugs, some of which were controlled substances, according to the complaint. One drug vial expired in 1993.

"During the inspections, Dr. Harrington referred to his staff regarding all sterilization and drug procedures in his office," the complaint read. "He advised, 'They take care of that. I don't.'"

Harrington allegedly re-used needles, contaminating drugs with potentially harmful bacteria and trace amounts of other drugs, according to the complaint. Although patient-specific drug records indicated that they were using morphine in 2012, no morphine had been ordered since 2009.

PST: Ex-French star calls Beckham 'unprofessional'

At this point, if we don?t all know what Brand Beckham is all about, then the joke is on us.

Apparently, former France international Bixente Lizarazu was not paying attention over the last few years as David Beckham frequently treated the LA Galaxy as his little side gig, clearly second fiddle to building and maintaining the iconic brand.

Lizarazu ? if the guy is still in soccer, I can?t find evidence of it ? found someone interested in what he has to say. So he took the opportunity to beat on Beckham a little for jet-setting over to China before next week?s huge Champions League clash; Beckham?s Paris Saint-Germain faces Barcelona in the marquee UEFA semifinal.

What Lizarazu told TF1:

I am sorry, but travelling to China to promote football only 10 days before the most important game of the season is simply not the right way to prepare. No other club would allow one of their players to go on a trip like this. It?s unprofessional.?

Uh, well, actually we know that one club did exactly that. The Galaxy generally acquiesced when Beckham wanted to go to his next royal wedding, modeling gig, Olympic event, etc.

PSG manager Carlo Ancelotti, by the way, wasn?t too worked up about it. He said Beckham returned on Wednesday and missed just one training session.

PFT: Davis stays with Redskins on one-year deal

CampbellGetty Images

When the Browns signed quarterback Jason Campbell, many assumed he?d potentially become the team?s starter in 2013.? And he?ll definitely get a chance to win the job, since he?s the first signal-caller signed by the new regime in Cleveland, after previously starting in Washington and Oakland.

For now, though, he?s getting paid like a backup, and not a lot when compared to other backups.? A source with knowledge of the contract tells PFT that Campbell?s contract pays out $1.5 million in 2013.

Specifically, he gets a base salary of $1.5 million in 2013, $500,000 of which is fully guaranteed.

That said, if Campbell can win the job, he?ll make more money via incentives.? Specifically, he gets $150,000 for 50 percent playing time in 2013, 65 percent results in $350,000, and 80 percent triggers $600,000.

In 2014, Campbell?s base salary is a bit higher, at $2 million.? He also gets roster bonus of $250,000 due the third day of the league year.

But there are escalators for 2014 based on playing time in the coming season.? Campbell?s 2014 base salary will increase by $500,000 based on 30 percent playing time in 2013.? 40 percent playing time in 2013 increases the 2014 salary by another $500,000.? Ten more percent in 2013?? Another $500,000 in 2014.? And if Campbell takes 65 percent or more of the snaps in 2013, his $2 million salary will double.

Still, his backup pay for 2013 is low, and that?s largely because Campbell?s options were limited.? Especially in light of the egg he laid when he had a chance during 2012 to sub for Jay Cutler in Chicago, during that Monday night debacle against the 49ers.

Campbell could have stayed in Chicago and backed up Cutler, or he could have gone to Cleveland with a chance to win the starting job.? If Campbell pulls it off, he?ll be paid more on the back end.

And if he plays really well in 2013, the Browns likely will tear up the 2014 deal and sign him to something better.

Sequester Cuts Trickle Down From The Middle Class

SUFFOLK, Va. -- The kitchen floor is curling up at Carol Rood's house. She and her partner removed the edging when they redid the cabinets last year, and now there's nothing to hold down the white-and-green linoleum where it meets the walls.

"This floor is nasty," Rood, 47, said during an interview in her kitchen. "That was the plan this year, was to do the floor. That's not happening now."

They're not fixing it because Rood's partner, Karol Sebastian, is facing at least two weeks' worth of unpaid days off from her job fixing helicopters for the U.S. Department of Defense. Sebastian, 45, is one of 90,000 civilian defense employees in Virginia expecting furloughs thanks to budget cuts known as sequestration.

This is the best-possible scenario for people directly affected by the cuts: Rood and Sebastian will stay solidly middle class, but their lifestyle will get just slightly shabbier at the edges. You might not even notice unless they told you about it.

"It's not going to knock us out of being middle-income people," Rood said. "I don't think we'll suffer. Suffer's not a good word because we live a really nice life."

Surely others will suffer more: the thousands of government workers and contractors who will be laid off, seniors and schoolchildren who will miss out on meals and early education programs, millions of long-term unemployed who will get stingier benefits, to name a few.

Sequestration's potential aggregate impact is what matters most. A family in Suffolk might represent the first chokepoint. The trouble is small when it starts with them, but when thousands and thousands of families tone their spending, the reverberation's pretty loud. Economists say the policy will result in 750,000 fewer jobs this year.

Rood and Sebastian anticipate getting something like $600 or $800 less per month from May through September, roughly 13 percent of their total income during that time. One of the first things they did at the beginning of the year when they realized they might have less money was to call a meeting with their three teenage boys.

"At the time, I didn't know how many days it was going to be," Sebastian said. "I was like, 'Look, I could lose my job for the summer.'"

Rood continued: "We gave them the whole story, their eyes kinda glassed over because they're teenagers, but they got the money part. They got the fact that we were going to be losing money so we would have to make changes."

For the kids, that means no more lunch money (they'll have to bag it instead) and a family data plan with less texting. For the parents, that means rebundling the cable package, putting plans on hold to pay down the car debt early, and holding off on more trips to the hair stylist. The messed up linoleum in the kitchen, the broken handle on the lawnmower, the malfunctioning second fridge that holds extra water and gallons of milk -- that stuff will have to wait. The nascent termite infestation won't, of course.

"That's the stuff that worries me," Rood said. "When life happens."

Though they consider themselves blessed, Rood and Sebastian said they find it irritating that their reduced income is the product of a pampered elite who supposedly don't even think sequestration is a good idea.

"I don't see any congressmen or senators going on furlough," Rood said. "That's the kind of thing that aggravates me."

Members of Congress are feeling the pinch in their own special way. The New York Times reported Wednesday that the U.S. Senate will be privatizing its Hair Care Services unit. Rood might dye her hair at home; future senatorial haircuts might lack taxpayer-subsidized marble bathtubs and a chandeliered sitting parlor.

Rood and Sebastian, both retired from the Navy, have plenty of sequestration company in the detached homes along the curvy streets of their neighborhood. The Hampton Roads area, which encompasses Suffolk and several other towns, is home to 39,000 civilian Defense Department employees. (Active duty personnel are shielded from cuts.)

"We're military, the guy behind us is Air Force, the guy next door is retired Navy, the guy two houses down is retired Navy," Rood said. "This entire neighborhood is saturated with military people."

And from what Rood has gleaned from conversations with her neighbors, a lot of them are also getting stuck with furloughs and layoffs. The concentration of defense personnel and contractors makes the area particularly vulnerable to cutbacks.

"In some sense sequestration is not a big deal in other parts of the country," said James Koch, an economics professor at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. "Whereas here in this region we're talking about losing a little more than 2 percent of our gross regional project, a little more than $2 billion a year."

Koch, an expert on the region, said the diminished cash equals 17,000 lost jobs, just shy of 3 percent of the regional labor force. Neighbors will notice the difference.

"People will go to shop in the mall and they'll find there are not as many people in the store, or maybe the store is closed," he said.

Rood and Sebastian have found a bright side: They're glad sequestration is teaching them to spend more carefully. On balance, it might even be a good year for them. They met in 2003 while deployed to Bahrain during the Iraq war. In 2006, they combined their families and bought their Suffolk house. But they can't get legally married in Virginia.

"We dealt with 'don't ask, don't tell' and then it was a really big deal for us when President Obama got rid of that," Rood said. She hopes the federal Defense of Marriage Act, debated this week at the U.S. Supreme Court, follows "don't ask, don't tell" out the door.

"In the big picture, I would take sequestration for six months if DOMA would be struck down," she said.

Romo gets paid

Troy PolamaluAP

Sometimes, wishes are quickly granted.? Sometimes, they already were.

Steelers safety Troy Polamalu wants player input in rule changes.? But the players already have input.

?I do wish . . . that the NFL did have a voice from the players? side, whether it?s our players? union president, or team captains, or our executive committee on the players? side,? Polamalu said earlier today on ESPN.? ?Because we?re the guys that realize the risk, we?re the guys on the field.?

As MDS pointed out, the players have a voice in the rule-revising process.? Specifically, this year?s the rule changes were discussed with NFLPA president Domonique Foxworth, who worked with Lester Archambeaux, Charlie Batch, Ernie Conwell, Matt Hasselbeck, Brandon Moore, Jeff Saturday, Ben Watson, and Eric Winston in providing input to the Competition Committee.

Also, Will Montgomery of the Redskins presented video to the Competition Committee in connection with the rule that makes the snapper a defenseless player.

Former players also had a voice with the Player Safety Advisory panel, which includes John Madden, Ronnie Lott, Ernie Accorsi, Antonio Freeman, Patrick Kerney, Willie Lanier, Oliver Luck, Steve Mariucci, Anthony Munoz.

So, basically, Polamalu already got what he wanted, without finding a lamp or losing an eyelash.

(AP) ? It's back.

The virtual reality headset, the gizmo that was supposed to seamlessly transport wearers to three-dimensional virtual worlds, has made a remarkable return at this year's Game Developers Conference, an annual gathering of video game makers in San Francisco.

After drumming up hype over the past year and banking $2.4 million from crowdfunding, the Irvine, Calif.-based company Oculus VR captured the conference's attention this week with the Oculus Rift, its VR headset that's more like a pair of ski goggles than those bulky gaming helmets of the 1990s that usually left users with headaches.

"Developers who start working on VR games now are going to be able to do cool things," said Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey. "This is the first time when the technology, software, community and rendering power is all really there."

While VR technology has successfully been employed in recent years for military and medical training purposes, it's been too expensive, clunky or just plain bad for most at-home gamers. Oculus VR's headset is armed with stereoscopic 3-D, low-latency head tracking and a 110-degree field of view, and the company expects it to cost just a few hundred bucks.

A line at the conference snaked around the expo floor with attendees waiting for a chance to plop the glasses on their head and play a few minutes of "Hawken," an upcoming first-person shooter that puts players inside levitating war machines.

Attendance was also at capacity for a Thursday talk called "Virtual Reality: The Holy Grail of Gaming" led by Luckey. When he asked the crowd who'd ordered development prototypes of the technology, dozens of hands shot into the air.

"There's been a lot of promise over several decades with the VR helmet idea, but I think a lot of us feel like Oculus and other devices like it are starting to get it right," said Simon Carless, executive vice president at UBM Tech Game Network, which organizes the Game Developers Conference. "We may have a competitive and interesting-to-use device, which you could strap to your head and have really immersive gaming as a result."

Sony and Microsoft are reportedly working on similar peripherals, as are other companies. Luckey contends that the innovations Nintendo made with its Wii U, Sony is planning with its upcoming PlayStation 4 and Microsoft is likely tinkering with for its successor to the Xbox 360 don't seem like enough.

"We're seeing better graphics and social networks, but those aren't things that are going to fundamentally change the kind of experiences that gamers can have," said Luckey.

A growing list of high-profile game makers have sung the device's praises, including Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, "Minecraft" mastermind Markus Peterson, id Software's John Carmack, "Gears of War" chief Cliff Bleszinski and Valve boss Gabe Newell.

Valve is planning to release a VR version of its first-person shooter "Team Fortress 2" for the Rift, but Luckey is hoping that designers in attendance at this week's conference begin creating games especially for the doodad.

"The doors are already open," noted Luckey. "People are already telling us things they want to do with the Rift that they can't do with traditional games."

Luckey said prototype versions of the technology are being distributed to developers now, and he anticipates releasing a version for consumers by next year.

Root Fungus Stores a Surprising Amount of the Carbon Sequestered in Soil

Falling leaves and branches are important, but roots and their fungi win out

A forest floor can store lots of atmospheric carbon, helping to limit global warming that results from carbon dioxide emissions. Most of that storage, scientists have thought, is found in tree leaves and branches that absorb carbon, eventually fall to the ground and slowly decay into soil. A new study in Sweden, however, indicates that 50 to 70 percent of the carbon bound in soil is actually from tree roots and the fungi that grow on them.

This surprising insight comes from Karina Clemmensen at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and colleagues who studied boreal forests on 30 islands in northern Swedish lakes. The forests were consumed by different numbers of fires over the past 5,000 years, providing a broad mix of soil compositions on different forest floors. The comparison revealed that the amount of carbon stored in soil was linked to mycorrhizal fungi that grow along tree-root systems and help to keep them healthy.

?These fungi live in symbiosis with plant roots and transport carbon from plant photosynthesis directly into the soil,? Clemmensen wrote in response to e-mail questions. ?The prevailing dogma had been that aboveground plant litter (dead needles and wood) is the principal source of carbon storage in boreal forest soils,? she explained. But her results show that ?a large proportion of the carbon stored in boreal forests instead enters the soil from beneath, via roots and their associated mycorrhizal fungi.?

Boreal forest soils are a major sink, holding 16 percent of all carbon sequestered in soils worldwide, according to a paper by Clemmensen?s team published March 29 in Science. The most immediate implication of the finding is that climate models should be revised to take into account the role that the fungi play. Revised models, Clemmensen wrote, would give more precise predictions of how forest management practices (such as thinning of trees) and environmental changes could influence carbon storage.

More research is also needed to determine if more older trees (so-called old-growth forests) worldwide would mean increased storage. As trees age, they allocate less carbon to root fungi, yet residues from old, dead fungi hang on to carbon more tightly than do dead needles and wood in the soil. Other studies, however, suggest that mycorrhizal fungi decompose organic matter in the soil, thereby releasing carbon. How these factors interact to form stable soil ?is a very interesting and intriguing question that we do not yet have the answer to,? Clemmensen wrote. What is clear is that mycorrhizal fungi are much more important to carbon sequestration than anyone had realized.

SGN - Seattle Gay News - Page 7 - Huck won't have it - Former ...

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Less than 24 hours after being endorsed by RNC chair Reince Priebus as a potential Republican Party spokesperson on LGBT issues, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee threatened that he and his fellow evangelicals would 'take a walk' if the GOP supports marriage equality.

As a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, Huckabee won a reputation as a common-sense politician with a sense of humor and the ability to relate to rank-and-file voters.

'I always tell people: Listen to Governor Mike Huckabee,' Priebus said March 25, echoing the public perception of the former governor. 'I don't know anyone that talks about [same-sex marriage] any better.'

Huckabee's reputation was always at odds with his fundamentalist religious views, however, as he demonstrated in a NewsMax interview soon after Priebus's remarks. Asked about Republican Sen. Rob Portman's endorsement of marriage equality and the possibility that the GOP as a whole might also reverse course and accept same-sex marriage, Huckabee responded with a threat to withdraw from the party.

'They might [endorse same-sex marriage],' he said. 'And if they do, they're going to lose a large part of their base because evangelicals will take a walk.'

AN 'OBJECTIVE STANDARD'
'And it's not because there's an anti-homosexual mood, and nobody's homophobic that I know of, but many of us, and I consider myself included, base our standards not on the latest Washington Post poll, but on an objective standard, not a subjective standard,' Huckabee continued.

'I have great sympathy and extraordinary admiration for Senator Portman. I consider him a friend and I value his work in the Senate and think he's a great person. The mistake is that we sometimes base our public-policy decisions on how we feel, how we think, maybe even some personal experiences, and we don't regard a lot of these issues from the standpoint of an objective standard.

'Let me explain what I mean by that. If we have subjective standards, that means that we're willing to move our standards based on the prevailing whims of culture. Politicians have an obligation to be thermostats, not just thermometers. They're not simply to reflect the temperature of the room, or the culture, as it were. They're to set the standards for law, for what's right, for what's wrong, understanding that not everybody's going to agree with it.

'On this issue, I recognize the culture is moving away from the traditional standard, but it's almost like saying, well, we have a basketball team and nobody on the team can hit the goal that's 10 feet off the floor so we're going to lower the goal down to six feet and that way everybody can slam-dunk the ball.

'So the question is, have you have improved your basketball game? Or have you actually just changed the standard so it looks like you're doing better? And that's my concern.'

FIGHTING THE FUTURE
While these views might have come as a surprise to Reince Priebus, they should not surprise anyone who is familiar with Huckabee's record.

'I support and have always supported passage of a federal constitutional amendment that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman,' Huckabee wrote on his 2008 campaign website. 'As President, I will fight for passage of this amendment. My personal belief is that marriage is between one man and one woman, for life.'

Huckabee has also opposed ENDA, DADT repeal, federal hate-crimes protections for LGBT people, and adoption rights for Gay and Lesbian couples.

If Huckabee's intransigent opposition to equality is typical of the evangelical wing of the Republican Party, and it probably is, the GOP will face huge obstacles trying to update its image and appeal to younger voters, who overwhelmingly accept Gay and Lesbian relationships.

A RESEARCH PROJECT SUBMITED TO NATIONAL TEACHER?S INSTITUTE, KADUNA

IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AWARD OF A POST GRADUKATE DIPLOMA (PGD) IN EDUCATION

    CHAPTER ONE

    INTRODUCTION

    1.1???????????? BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY:

Mathematics can be defined as the science of number and space and the language of science and technology. It is an essential requirement by every field of intellectual Endeavour and human development to cope with the challenges of life.? Mathematics can also be defined as the

queen and servant of all the school subjects since it cut across the school curricula. It is equally seen as the language used to describe the problems arising in technology.? It relates other school subjects in areas like number and numeration, variations, graphs, fractions, solution of equation, and areas and volumes.

Brief history of the formal teaching of mathematics in Nigeria Started with Arithmetics a component of mathematics at the primary and postprimary schools Fajemidagba (1999), according to him, Arithmetics was compulsory for every primary school pupils and must be passed before a pupil? could obtain the ?Primary school leaving certificate,? the same condition holds for the Teacher Training Colleges either grade II or III. ??After the launching of the Sputnik, the first earth Satellite in space in November 1957 by the Russians, which according to Griffiths and Howson (1974) has an enormous effects on American Complacency about superiority in engineering capability over that of Russians.? The result of the doubt were series of hot debates and arguments on the suitability or otherwise of the school mathematics and curricula.? These occurrences were called ?issues and forces?: behind the reformation of school mathematics Curricula Contents, which also affect various reforms in school Mathematics programme in Nigeria. The reformation of mathematics curricula has continued to evolve considering its enormous importance to the development of the world. Mathematics still remains one of the core and compulsory subjects for the Nigerian students at both primary and post primary schools. Recently, mathematics has become a determining factor to gaining admission into most Nigerian universities as it must be passed up to credit level before one gains admission.? ?

In spite of its importance to the students? advancement in academics, many students dread mathematics. Given the right to chose, many secondary school students would outrightly avoid mathematics, this is because?? many of them have developed some elements of fears about the subject, may be, as a result of long time negative information they get every year about the poor and low level performance in WAEC and NECO examinations in Mathematics or other factors this research work sets?? out to unravel. According to Ajagun (2000) the performance of students in both junior and senior secondary science in Nigeria has remained an issue of concern to all stakeholders.

Dwelling more on the fear of mathematics by the secondary school students, psychologytoday.com defines? fear as a vital response to physical and emotional danger? if we didn?t feel it, we couldn?t protect ourselves from the?? legitimate threats.? Toscany Academy (2012) This quote can be translated in the context of threat posed by mathematics to the candidates preparing for the examination.? Since most of these students have lost hope and psychologically? defeated due to fear, this affect their level of interest and passion in the subject and the greater percentage of students opt for examination malpractices and resort to external help.? We all know that fear is learnt, ?a burnt child dreads fire? is a saying we often use showing that a child learns from his/her?? experiences.? Fear is also contagious as children learn fear from observing other show fears.?? Children also learn fear from their contemporaries.

Phobia in the other hand is a clinical or pathologically intense fear often irrational leading to a compulsive need to avoid a thing or event.

(NTI PDE 102:187) the term ?Phobia? in an everyday life can be used to refer to fears which have rational?? origin. When?? fear reaches an extreme pitch, it becomes a phobia. The? implication? of the above in? a child is,? if?? failure is greeted?? with scolding and corporal? punishment with little attention? to? motivation, clarity and? relevance, student? will? dislike to learn a particular subject.? When experience of learning becomes so unpleasant, it creates the emotions of fear and boredom. In such situation,?? even the brightest pupils will fail to profit?? from learning (NTI, PDE 102)?

    1.2? STATEMENT?? OF THE PROBLEM

The lackadaisical attitude of the?? students?? towards mathematics in our secondary school has reached such an extreme pitch, that every lover of education, growth and development of Nigeria cannot afford to keep mute on the happenings in the mathematics education.? Ajagun (2000) decried ?the?? performance of students in both junior and senior secondary science has remained an issue of concern to all the stakeholders. The overwhelming personal observation on? the types of students? found in science classes of our?today- secondary schools in? Nigeria can be better? imagined than? to engage as ones students. In?? the past, we used to have brilliant? students in sciences,? if that? is true,? it implies that something has gone? wrong somewhere, either that our students? do not work? hard again, or? they have been overtaken by fear of some of? these? subjects. Fear as we all know is learnt?? and it is contagious and?? dangerous. It may have struck our students into avoidance of mathematic.

Phobia has been defined as a clinical or pathologically intense fear often irrational leading to a compulsive need to avoid an event or thing. Personal observation has also revealed that many a student?? would desert or dodge mathematics class just? before?? the? arrival of?? the teacher and?? during the examination he/she?? struggles? to pass at all cost. It is? against? these ugly trend and background ?that the? researcher sets out to? investigate? some of the causes and? effects of? phobia in? mathematics among secondary school students in Abakaliki?? Local? Government? Area? with a view to? allaying the fear in our students? and? to better position them with right? disposition for active? learning of mathematics.

    1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY?

The general purpose of this study is to investigate the possible causes and effects of students? phobia in mathematics as? regards to implications and?? threats posed to the development of our country Nigeria and the developments of science and technology.

The specific purpose of this study is derived from the general purpose?? stated above, these include the following:

i.??????????????????? ?To x-ray the causes of phobia? in? mathematics amongst the secondary school students in Abakaliki Local Government? Area?

ii.???????????????? To investigate the effects of this phobia in?? mathematics? on the students performance in both internal and external examination

iii.?????????????? To find out how teaching techniques and instructional materials would improve the lukewarm attitudes of students towards ??mathematics.

iv.?????????????? To access the? impact of ??phobia in? mathematics to the development of science and technology Nigeria

    1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY?

This study is of immense significant as the findings would use in the following ways:

i.??????????????????? ?To help students overcome the unnecessary that has hampered from effective learning of mathematics in our secondary schools.

ii.???????????????? To help?? the students? improve on their?? performances in mathematics and? other science subjects ?

iii.?????????????? The prevalent cases of? examination malpractices amongst the secondary ?school students especial in? mathematics would?? be reduced to? the? barest? minimal

iv.?????????????? It will equally help to improve on? the? number of candidates wishing?? to make? career in mathematics in our tertiary? institutions

v.????????????????? The Nigerian government stands to benefit?? from this research work in the aspect of positioning the?? country as a technological and industrialized nation since the bedrock of science and technology is mathematics. Again?? the guest for??? self ?reliance and self ?employment to the teeming youths will find solutions in this research work.

    1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This research project will only explore on the causes and effects of phobia in mathematics amongst the secondary school students in Abakaliki Local Government Area only. Nevertheless, it would have been ideal enough to carryout?? this research in the whole of Ebonyi State and Nigeria at large so as to reach an irrevocable conclusion on the matter, but for time and financial constraints.? The?? questionnaire and interview will? be structured to cover? only ten secondary schools? in? Abakaliki? Local? Government Area? and the content? would span on the causes of phobia in mathematics, the consequences of phobia? in the? students performance in both internal and external examinations.? It will equally harness the best teaching techniques and instructional materials for??? the effective learning and?? lesson delivery. The importance of?? mathematics to the national development?? will be brought to bare.?

    1.6 RESEARCH? QUESTIONS

In the course of carrying out this project work, the following questions have been formulated to provide the needed information to achieve the set?? objectives of this study; namely

1.????? What are the cases of phobia in mathematics among?? the students of secondary schools, in Abakaliki?
